Driving an E90 325 on lowered suspension. Just got my tyres checked at a tyre shop to fill with N-gas and noticed that my 19 Taiwan rims are dented on the inner circumference, especially a rear rim which seem to be quite badly hit. Dunno where this came from, maybe ran over some potholes? Shop told me the air will not leak based on the signs of damage. Also said dented rims can cause further damage to a car's shock-absorber. Is that true? What other ill efects are there?
+1,000. Rims breaking on the highway can be lethal for you and people around you.
One thing though is to get it checked again at a workshop OTHER than the one who told you it's dented (i.e. get a second opinion).
I had a rather "famous" tyre shop once tell me my rim was dented and I had to replace it. I got a 2nd opinion at Borneo Motors who said my rims were fine. Turns out that tyre shop was rather famous for its "dented rim" ruse.
think safety paramount. imagine all those power from the engine but only 4 tiny patches linking it to the road. give you peace of mind plus less steering vibration.
(1) Check with a tyre shop on wheel balancing - need not tell them which one. If they could spot "vibrations" on one wheel, then you have a genuine issue.
(2) If the wheels have cracks, or structurally damaged (even if merely suspicious), change it. Your life, and the passengers', is worth more than a wheel.
If in doubt, change the wheel. Not imposing lack of faith in Taiwanese wheels, but I will not trust my life on shoes made in Taiwan.
