What happens if I change final drive from 3.45 to 3.38?

Would the acceleration suffer alot on a E46 318 valvetronic auto.
Is it true that fuel consumption will improve?

Thanks

Bro,

You still havent gotten around to change your diff?

There is no 3.45, only 3.46.

The margin between 3.46 and 3.38 was proven too minor to pay any attention to.
Alvin666 did a 3.38 to 3.46.

yah... going to get it changed.
All 318 valvetronics auto are on 3.45 :)
The 3.46 are from 323i, I think.
U got a spare?

what are the benefits of changing to a lower FD? easier to rev?

Most ppl wants to upgrade their FD from 2.93 to 3.15 or 3.38 to 3.45 for better 'pick-up' / acceleration.

Got the pic?

If u're oready on 3.91 & driving a 318i.....going 3.38 would be a no no...cos any Getz will outrun you from standstill......:lol2:

Wil,

The last time you cracked your final drive you changed to 3.91?
PML confirmed with me based on chassis no. that my E46 318 N42 is on 3.45 (38:11)... and the 320s are on 3.38 (44:13)..., the 3.91 are for other markets.

If you were on 3.91, no wonder your previous great white is so fast :)

Re: What happens if I change final drive from 3.45 to 3.38?

Please read the spec carefully.....

The 3.38 that u mentioned is I=44:13=3,38
Wheras the 3.45 ratio is I=38:11=3,45

The earlier is for manual gears, and the latter for auto.

Also, like wilson mentioned, i think all 318i and 320i that landed in sg is supposed to be 3.91. Changing to a lower ratio, ie smaller number will help in long cruising since the rev is lower but this may not necessarily means lower consumption. The reason being the highway in sg is not really free flowing and often than not, u may have to pick up and fill up the gap. With the car at lower rpm, the car will not have enought torque and the DME will pick this info up and downshift the car to the correct gear for the extra power needed. U therefore ended up having to downshift all the time for a simple overtaking manouver.

Lower cc car will have a higher final ratio so that the car will not feel lethargic and higher cc car will have lower final drive to make full use of the available torque to propel the car forward without having to run out of gears easily.

I supposed ur car should be running ard 2k rpm at 90kph and dropping it further, the engine will be outside it's effective power band.

In any case, if u r indeed on 3.45, changing to a 3.38 is so marginal and i doubt u will get any real world saving. 3.15 may be more significant but then again, it would be like what i have mentioned.

Re: What happens if I change final drive from 3.45 to 3.38?

yep yep, well said.

I still have a 3.46 for sale.

3.38 is out on loan.

The one that I broke was 3.91 also! We have seen at least 40 E46 318~320 either PI or PML cars are all with 3.91 FD.

Why your car so special???

The easiest is to go under your car & take alook at your own FD to confirm!
