What's going on with our Chinese language?

Was just watching the Chinese news at 10 pm and shocked to hear that Laos is called 老挝 (lao wo) and not 寮国 anymore. Remember what New Zealand is called now?

Is there anyone in MOE or Mediacorp here who can enlighten? This is really mind-boggling. :thinking:

New Zealand is called as 纽西兰 on Spore TV. Taiwan/HongKong TV called as 新西兰... Dunno which is correct also :thinking:

no surprise....think they are adopting the china way of pronouncing it.....i used to all this 老挝，澳大利亚，新西兰...thats what the china chinese term them.
small matter, dun think MOE or Mediacorp will bother to enlighten....haha

maybe the sg culture here is ppl clap hands when ppl tok ang mo eloquently or kong dialect sibey sak...speak mandarin agar agar there can already..

If they are consistent, then TAXI will be 计程车 instead of 德士......

in china, we call it 出租车。

for more chinese advanced education, i think u can seek the guidance of Professor Tay ala SLK69 at his Sar Lau Academy of Chinese Studies....valet parking available too

I think the important thing is that numbers are the same. Yi Bai, Liang Bai, etc. Sszone say one.

Actually in recent years, S'pore TV calls New Zealand 新西兰as well

Most confusing for me is Indonesia... I've always known it as 印尼, but the Chinese call it 印度尼西亚.

I checked this with my PRC colleagues and they say they only use 印尼 as an abbreviation.
