What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

i guess everyone's had said their story.... here's mine:

Cars runs in my family. I love cars in general... started with my grandfather whom started off this. In the fifties, my grandfather had always wanted to have a car of his own... worked hard and started his own company in the sixties. Since then, he always been a fan of British cars, especially Ford and Morris. During that time, cars are relatively cheap and so are petrol. He owned a few ford such as the 1968 Cortina GT, 1973 Ford Capri and a 1979 Lotus Cortina before switching to a e23 BMW 728i in 1982. When i took a ride in the 728, i loved the spaciousness and stability of the car. My dad at that time owned a souped up Toyota Celica 1600GT but after that, he changed to the Benz 200 W123. He himself owned this model for a decade and owned an S-class for 3 yrs b4 finally got he's hands on his e23 728i in 1998.
For me, whn i got my license, i went to hunt ard for my own car.... thought of buying civics or starlets... but when i was bitten by the BMW bug.... i changed my mine and went to hunt for a BMW instead...
After some long searching, finally found the car that i've been looking for... A 1982 BMW E21 315. Since then, i've fell in love with the agility n handling of the car, even despite having driven alot of other cars, nothing compares to way and uniqueness of driving a 3 series then. And with that, i've set my mind to carry on with the 3 series, and after i've exported my car out whn COE dued, i went ahead to get an E30... but alas, i temporaily drove a jap car as E30s are hard to come that time.
So after 1 yr plus, finally found wat i've been looking for... my current car: A 1989 BMW E30 316i... and i've been with this car for the past 2 yrs plus...
Perhaps in future, i'm thinking of going for the e36 3 series or the e34 5 series....
Hope i din bore anyone here to death with my long story.... hahaha :p

Cheers everyone!

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

Before puberty, girls and hairy armpits I fell in love when an older friend took me for a spin in an E30 M3 in the states. When i came back to sing, i convinced my dad to go test drive a 530i and besides the good handling, he didnt like it and has been driving mercs and lexus all these years. Wat a bore....

When i was in JC, i got my first car which was a new suzuki swift GTI.. yes i was kinda lucky then. i threatened my parents to get a bike license after passing my car license if they didnt buy me a car. I purposely left motor rider accident articles in newspaper lying around so they would see it. i know, i was a conniving kid hehe. A couple of my JC mates and me used to race to school and Holland V(highly irresponsible i know) and one of them had a 328 coupe which in those times, u were king. After numerous trips to principals office and getting caught by TP, racing at 180km/h with a 325 convertible on ECP while on P plate, i wised up. I will always be grateful to Sgt Jonathon Sng for not taking away my license.(after much pleading and sob stories though) Though i loved my first car, when i laid my eyes on a 850CSI, i told myself now this is a real MAN's car... not like my boyracer car and that one day i gotta have something like tat. Despite the porsches and ferrari's and escort cosworth's around, the 850 to me was the most impressive.

Then went to army and overseas uni and my honda fascination began which led to a civic type r, prelude type S and finally a DC2 type r integra and the whole horde of mods and trackday adventures. But luckier still, I had a good friend who left his NSX and E36 M3 3.2 6 speed with me sometimes too. The NSX was everything i dreamed of but handling wise, it wasnt as fun as the M3. I learnt to do fishy's(powerslides/oversteer) in the M3. Remember from above ive always driven FWD. You cant do it in the NSX, trust me i have tried unless u have balls of steel.

One thing i have realised after driving so many hondas and BMs over the years is that at the very soul of Honda/BMW, they are passionate motor engineers. Ultimately these are 2 very engineering focused carmakers unlike alot others. Toyota can be the no.1 carmaker in the world and their cars can run forever without breaking down, but for me they lack soul and a kind of emotional connectivity than any real driver yearns and desires.

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

changster u speak like me about hondas and beemers. to me these 3 makers are very close....high revving NA engines....the other 2 are of cos alfas and ferrari....one not too reliable (then)..the other always too expensive. in fact if u put 2 type-r engines together u get exactly 400hp the power of the modena....i used to tell my friends that.

vtec, variable valve timing and lift is perhaps one of the greatest achievement in the NA world. saves petrol yet delivers good kicks...nothing like the sound of a screaming vtec. i just heard one of those rare manual SIRs this morning..i gladly let him overtake me...just so i can hear that sound....

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

Seems like everyone has a story to tell about their love for BMWs!

For me, the first Bimmer I fell in love was one of the classic 7 series model. Not so sure of the E__ code though. Well anyway that was around 1986 when my dad was looking to purchase a new car and he brought back this BMW brochure. It began my favourite book that I brought along to admire, but sadly he bought a W124 series 300E instead. Then 5 years back, I went to Vancouver, stayed at my cousin's place and he drove us around in an E46 Bimmer and then the M3 came out and it restarted my passion for Bimmers. Now my cousin has stayed with BMW and gotten an X5 (they are really cheap in Canada) and I got myself recently an E90 320i in Singapore. I guess I should be sticking with this brand for a very long time, since their products range from affordable yet fun cars like the 1 and 3 series to 'super' cars like the V10 M5 and M6. What other car company can offer such great products now?

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

Wah... how come I never knew such a thread existed!? I also got story to tell.

I love cars from young. I loved my dad's red ford escort, and I loved his carribean blue Rover 820.

After a while of sharing cars, my dad bought me an Audi A4 1.6 Auto... with sports rims.. I liked it too!

Then my dad got S280 with the airmatic suspension and all... and I was smitten as well. so comfy. At that time, what was BMW? huh? eee... so ugly... esp the E36 and the prefacelift E46 sedan - horrid... (oopss. sorry if i offended anyone...)

As my undergrad years passed by, i started falling in love with this thing called "ci".. I remember being wowed whenever I saw a BMW coupe drive pass. I told myself - my dream car! haha

and so i graduated and started work.

It never crossed my mind to buy BMW cos, well, it just didnt matter to me whether I drove a BMW or an Audi or a Merc....

One funny day i happened to drive my PML in my audi... hmmm. why not kaypoh go inside see see look look..

And so i did... I asked the sales girl who was free if i could test drive,,, she said only got sedan, but no coupe test drive car.. Then she asked me if i wanted 318 or 320? I was huh? whats the difference?

so she say one what 4 cylinder one 6 cylincer etc... catch no balls totally.. I was like hmm... ok lah .320 then.

We test drove a maroon 4 door 320.

Wonderful drive... I just couldnt forget the drive.. I had to buy the BMW.. it was perfect in my eyes.

I ordered my first BMW black 320ci - 2 days later.

the rest, as they say is history.

and i started modding and modding....and stickers and stickers...

and till today, my love for BMW remains alive!

=)

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

The 1st time i sat in a BMW is way back in 1977 and i was only 6yrs old then, it was a lemon yellow 2002tii with a sunroof. The ride was aweeeeeeeesssooooommeeeee with the sunroof open wind blowing in during drive, wow this car is more rock solid than my dad's Datsun 100A FIII ( a 6yr old thinking) ehhehe. The car belongs to my dad's cousin and the following yrs the bugger bought a 3.0 SI. Even until now everytime i look at my steering badge it reminds me of the lemon yellow, so its the badge that makes me drool about them, the badge tells me what it has(quality, refinement, engineering, driving dynamics, sportiness etc) To me die die i must drive BMW, can't afford brand new one, old one will do hahahahaha....

Wha, I am just like you on the Z3 love on 1st sight. But I ended buying a Z4 this yr and joined this nice forum to know more about BMW.

Actually, 2 yrs back, I bought the E46 320 and everything was like a dream. The Sales Girl told me that once I own a BM, it will be BM all the way. True in some sense. I actually bought other marques after the 320 before coming back to Z4.

Sold my Z4 but still think of it many times, just can't forget the top down drive and its beautifil design, , drive,....if I have spare moola, I will get one back some day.

So, see? she is right. :laughlik:

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

Hmmm My love for BMW ain't exactly love at first sight. But I got the passion for cars in my blood.
(WARNING MIGHT OFFEND SOME PEOPLE HERE SO I'M SAYING SORRY BEFORE HAND)

When I first saw the Z3 on the singapore road, my reaction was it was Fugly.
It looked like out of propotion car. Hated the total design, especially the convertable version.

Then when i was 20 like last year, I grew curious at how a normal car would cost in sg. So I looked at my fav cars like the WRX, EVO and ACCORD EURO R. Was taken aback by the price of a simple car like accord. Then I saw the price of a BMW.
It got me thinking that I might as well get that. Then a friend who does custom car model kits showed me a mag on BMW.

WOW!!! I loved the very stright lines and fierce front grill on the BMW M3 (cant remember how old it was though) That caught my eye and the specs were off the charts to me. So I did more research on the car. And NSFMW( Need For Speed Most Wanted) had the BMW M3 as the main starting car drew me in to the void called BMW LOVE :)

Did some on-line search and found BMW-SG and been hooked ever since. Man I love this forum

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

for me, the start of the love was when I raced them in Oz.

The end of the love was when reliability problems gave us huge problems.

Not really a `on the road' love affair ... but that's my only real exposure to them, save the car rags... and the endless march of 3 and 5 series on our roads here.

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

Oooh, old thread but a good thread.

Well, it started when I first sat in my father-in-law's 5 series about 7 years ago. He wasn't my father-in-law at that time, just my girlfriend's father. I had always liked Mercs but admit that I never sat in a BMW so my preference until that time was pretty groundless. Well, I fell in love with his 5 almost immediately. What I particularly liked (and this is particularly cheesy) were the soft glow of the orange dashboard lights at night. The feel of the car, the way it handled the road and the comfort converted me from Merc to BMW almost instantly.

However, I couldn't afford a BMW. I had to continue oogling his 5 series each time I visited him and more so when he changed to the new 5 last year. I kept telling my wife then that BMWs were great but never really thought of buying one (always a little too out of our budget).

But... good things come to those who wait. Got a decent paying job and was able to save up and get my own 3 this year (it's now a month old!). It's one thing to sit in one and really, quite another, to drive it.

I'll always remember the first time I sat in the 5 and while the 3 isn't as fanciful as the 5, it'll more than do for the moment :)

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

It all started in 1997, 10 yrs ago, when I 1st bought my e36 silver 316iA/4 with full Racing Dynamics kit and 18" rims. Damn Chio man... That's how I fell in luv with it & bought it. I owned also a Mitsubishi Colt & handed that car to my wife (then girlfriend) to drive. 1 day, we debated on the car to drive to our friend's party, I decided to "show off" my ride & we drove the BEEMER there. On the way, we met an accident, a Mazda RX7 (bloody old car) smashed onto my RHS dr & rt frt fender, causing we to swerve to avoid the barriers along the CTE & come to a stop. The RX7 was totalled, like a classic mini (remember it had a long bonnet type?!, now like a crumpled paper) My wife & I came out dazed, the driver was not so fortunate. It was from then I thanked my lucky stars that I chose the BEEMER than the Colt. Otherwise, I would not be writing this message to my brothers... I have learnt that its better to insure yourself on the rd by driving a SOLID car rather than risk it with a thin can. Its like a insurance. I have grown to enjoy the technology behind the brand's engineering and from safety, it evolved to be dynamics, that's why I owned a high powered version, rather than constantly changing & upgrading, one time pain pain better. You'd enjoy the experience so much more... :)

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

never ever was into cars cos my priority has always been the house, rather than the wheels.

havin settled the 1st goal, i finally got down to getting my 1st car, even whilst i was still taking my driving lessons. (my woman test drove it while i test sat as the passenger) =P

the 523i surely worked well as my lucky charm n i passed my test a month later. been driving it since n altho i dunno any betta since this is my first , i definitely found love in this arranged marriage n im still loving it! =]

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

my lust for beemers started when i first drove my dad's 5 series 10 years ago. was amazed at the great handling for such a bulky car. was back in town for the summer holidays at that time, used to drive a nissan 240sx (american silvia 2.4 liter normally aspirated) and i never thought a 5 series could handle as well as if not better than that classic jap ah beng car. the first drive blew me away: point and shoot steering. during cornering, the entire chassis would just head in the direction you were shooting at. fxxx! i thought only smaller cars with 50/50 weight distribution could do that.. from that point on, i was hooked...

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

hmmm, good topic
I had not really looked at BMW's before, although i do remember a few years back there was a blue M3 at my mates panel shop getting a repair after a track day incident, that was a nice car, full of Motec stuff etc.
Then come to Singapore, need car, tell my secretary, buy me a car, came back with a BMW, that'll do i thought!! Join BMW.SG, full of nasty, nasty people, why?? All got DAM NICE cars, now bug has struck. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I hate the following
OLL's 7
Toto's 5
Sams 335, and now Hitmee, Ken, Omar, soon to be ABD
Subzero's e46
the list goes on

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

First love's always been Aston Martin - but shifting to Singapore shattered that dream, so the only car which I would drive which I could afford was the Beemer.

Used to live in London earlier, and an E39 M5, E46 M3, E92 335i and E92 335d have passed through my hands.

Biggest thing I miss - blxxdy diesel engines are not allowed here. IF they were, BMW makes the best diesel in the world - sold as the E92 335d M Sport. Absolutely awesomely gorgeous. Wipes the floor with anything in a similar (and up to twice) the price range.

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

thankx to Ninja07's SG-carmart sale advert; my journey into the amazing world of bimmers started with his wonderful e30 sedan...

e30 are an everLusting creation... i hope to get one back eventually to build..

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

first encounter was writing off an e36 325i coupe when i just passed in the late 90s... the downer? it was a friend's car...

made me determined to 'master' this king of rwds.

later had the opportunity for a hot lap with ringo in the e39 m5, one lap slow-in-fast-out, the next completely sideways on all the corners.

also tried the e36 m3 and m3 evo when the e46 m3 first made its appearance in sgp.

more recently, tried the z4M roadster and the e90 M3 4-dr saloon.

ive yet to hit a sour spot with any of the models. bmw is still very good at what it does.

regards,

Re: What's The Start Of Your Love For BMW

My love affair for BMW's only started when i owned my first car , a Nissan March, felt something was missing, then I started to look around and I fell in love with the whole idea of rear wheel drive platforms and balanced handling, which led me to BMW.

I almost bought a 116i from a PI, but didn't work out. Now, booked a 120i cabrio as my first BMW :) cheers
