Wheel setup - rubber profile

ok, some might have different setup.
i'm talking about "recommended" setup for 19 and 20 inch wheel for E60 vs F10

E60 19-inch wheel = 235/35/19 & 265/30/19 (even upsize to 245/275 profile still 35/30)
E60 20-inch wheel = 245/35/20 & 285/30/20

F10 19-inch wheel = 245/40/19 & 275/35/19
F10 20-inch wheel = 245/35/20 & 285/30/20

what has changed in F10 that 19-inch wheel recommended profile is 40/35 vs E60 35/30 while 20-inch wheel profile remain the same?

i understand that the larger the wheel the smaller the profile.
but, why F10 19-inch wheel profile is 40/35 ?

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

Think E60 is 245/35 and 275/30 for 19, and 245/30 and 275/25 for 20, both are too low profile IMHO. E60 M5 is 255/40 and 285/35 for 19, which is a better balance between stiffness and having enough rubber for street use (again IMHO).

With a larger wheel well, E60 M5 can accommodate larger wheel (including tyre) diameter. Presume F10 has wheel wells larger than non-M5 E60 has.

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

base on Bimmer factory recon
E60 (excl M5) up to 19" 245/35/19 and 275/30/19
after market 20" 245/30/20 and 275/25/20 or 285/25/20
F10 (excl M5) 245/40/19 and 275/35/19
20' 245/35/20 and 275/30/20
from some owners point of view, why care so long the car can move can liao

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

I think it just mean f10 is designed to use a bigger wheel than e60. For f10 the wheel size is about 680mm and for E60 the wheel size is 645mm.

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

ok. so F10 wheel arch is designed to take big wheel with higher profile?

19 inch = profile 40/35 (e60 35/30)
20 inch = profile 35/30 (e60 30/25)

i was told don't anyhow upsize the profile as this has a "direct impact" to the brake whether it can take it or not

I dont think it is a good idea to change to change the wheel size. Manufacturers design the drivetrain and other components around the original wheel size. Changing to a bigger wheel is like 'gearing up'. You will have a more sluggish accleration, inaccurate speedo etc.

No, not that, but the change in rolling circumference.

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

I think the starting point for both cars are different.

E60 starts from 16" -> 225/55 16

F10 starts from 17" -> 225/55 17

Thicker sidewall mean more cushy ride.

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

E60 19 should follow M5 but no one does it as all tire shops give the same profiles as the 3-er..
I have said this many times in the past. Reason is becaue the 40/35 profiles on 19 can't be used on 3-er so everyone gets 35/30 on staggered set ups
One size fits all ah.......

good point

E60 is confirmed Bimmer recommend 245/35/19 and 275/30/19 from book or sticker
is not the tireshop gave
IS yes for E90 Bimmer recommend 225/35/19 and 255/30/19 but you can see most running on
235/35/19 and 265/30/19 , why ? the second one is very common size as compare to the 1st
So sometime 1 has to decide what set up you want and prepare for the diff look and behavior.
Car tuner does give different tyre size and rim offset in order to give more aggresive look

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

E90 OE 225/35 & 255/30 because OE rim width is 19x8 (front) and 19x9 (rear)
majority runs 235/265 because aftermarket rim width is 19x8.5 19x9.5 & 19x10
the profile is the same which is 35/30 >> in accordance to spec

Dude, that's exactly why tire shop gives. They won't stock M5 profiles tires and they will recommend to both 5-er n 3-er cars and also 6-er.

And if that is what confirmed by Bimmer then it's pure coincidental IMO.

If I drive a 5-er, I'd want 40/35. The wheel arches are bigger and 35/30 just make them look ugly like wheels wrapped with solid rubber. Of course tires like RE11 or AD08 can give you that thick look due to their thicker shoulder blocks.

Anyway, there's no harm with the 35/30 on 19 but I find the ride comfort is compromised on a supposedly a big luxurious sedan.

So the fender rubbing if 40/35 is all BS?

Can I put 255/40 on 18" M135 rim (think it is 8J)? Tyre shop says only 245/40, same BS?

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

Haha like so hard to hear true stories n theory from tyre shops, think their stories depends on the stocks they have. One recommend me 245/40/19 , 275/35/19

This tyre calculator is quite good. From one of the threads

1010TIRES.COM® — Tires and Wheels Absolute Authority.

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

i think the rolling diameter is very important....

that being said.. i am going for 255/35R20 and 285/30R20...

is not hard to hear true story if you like them.
to me very simple, you can always do your own study and home work
you can use any size you like and just responsible for your own decision.
assume 1 put 40 and 35 for his E60 (he loves the look) and PML said your tyre spec did not follow their contract or condition, and 1 day many other bimmer owners tells you why you used this setup ,or you feel your car more sluggish or bumpy.
We can simply tell them I LOVE this set up and I am very HAPPY ,i dont care what others comments.

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

My OEM BMW rims re 245/35/20 and 275/30/20 and I always assume this is the correct one because thats what PML supplied with the rims (Dunlop runflats)...

So now I can put 40 in front and 35 at the rear?

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

40/35 is for 19-inch wheel ie: 245/40/19 & 275/35/19 to maintain equivalent rolling circumference with 245/35/20 & 275/30/20

Re: Wheel setup - rubber profile

so can i just confirm that for 19 inch on e60, i can use 40 and 35 profile tyre instead of 35 and 30? I too find the profile is too thin and looks very thin esp on coilover. I will love the 40 front and 35 rear profile tyre. From my undestanding like other bro that E60 M5 can use higher profile tyee is due to their wider fender. If this is BS, then i am gonna look for tyre shop to order 40 and 35 tyre for my next change. ....
