When to change tires?

How would you know that your tires are sufficiently worn out & time to change?
- Are there any specific markings/indicators on the tires that will assist in the assessment?
- thread depth?
- Rule of thumb "distance travelled" ? I guess it'll be different for regular tires vs performance tires.

Re: When to change tires?

i use the thread as a rule of thumb because distance travelled varies from the kinda tires you got and how you drive your car. e.g. if you track the car, your tires are going to wear out a lot faster than regular driving. performance tires usually wear out faster than regular tires.

Or when your tires are like these...

Re: When to change tires?

There is a safety marking on the tire...not sure on all brands.
Also depends whether you do rotation every 10km

Sometimes when your car starts behaving like those in Intial D thingy w/o u realize it, that's oso a sign :lol2:

Re: When to change tires?

There are small triangles at the edges right? If the wear reaches those triangles, its time to change??

If it starts doing the Initial D thingy, it may be too late woh.

bro, the small triangles at the edges point to the safety markings on the tire itself. run your fingers from the triangle upwards and onto the tire thread, you will feel a bump between the tire grooves. this bump represents the safety limit to where the tire can wear itself. most tires will have this triangle marking. hope this helps....

Re: When to change tires?

More importantly on the inner side of tires? Since most lowered car have a more negative camber? SL2, you mean:

the word 藤原とうふ店 ? I have actually seen one printed boldly on the side of a black Mazda 3. Didnt see what tires he was on though.

if your wheels are negatively cambered, i guess its to rotate yr wheels lor.....

Re: When to change tires?

just stick your hand into the wheel well to feel the threadwear indicators. Every tyre feel 2 times, one on the inside, one closer to the outside of the tyre. if on any side the threadwear indicator is exposed already, then go and change out.

another thing to take note of is time. If you are keeping your 318i as a future concours classic car in 50 years' time and even though mileage is triple digits low, in about, say 5 years max, you should still change away your almost unused tyres coz they would have hardened with time and dont grip well even in the dry anymore.

Re: When to change tires?

i usually change my tires at ~ 40000km even if thread wear indicator is not exposed because i hate it when my ride sounds like an aeroplane cockpit

Re: When to change tires?

Its about there lar. 40-60k km depending on road conditions, driving style, etc.

Re: When to change tires?

Hi there,

Normally, the rule of thumb is every 40,000km or 2 years whichever come first.

If you done tire rotation on every visit to your service center, your tire life span should be ok.

Non-performance tire is per above-mentioned, but performance tire will be shorter - it's all depend on how you "stress"your tire....

The mails reply from other members are also right on the checking of the tire.
