i beginning to like all the brake dust shit. it's making my stock rims look like gun metal color and more rugged.

anyways, i don't quite get the brake dust shit thing is normal for a BMW because of blah blah blah because if it happens in a Jap car i'm sure people will say another thing.

last time i only clean the exterior of the rim, then the inner rim wall still full of brake dust, inevitable for the dust to shift out.
so went to get the turtlewax wheel brush to clean the inner rim wall, wash until inside-out also bling bling. since then, brake dust still bearable. now i only wash rims once or twice a week. anyway, the dust is bearable for me as long as the pads do their job lah. safety first mah

best solution, buy a jap car so you don't complain about brake dust.


Buy a decent pad, its your brakes we are talking about, they save your life, brake dust on rims doesnt.

Fishrock, like what Phil says, brake dust makes your rims look dirty but they won't kill. Don't change pads just because there's dust, really.

But brO, i tink phil juz dnt get it :screwedu: he dnt seems to understand/know dats BMW orginal brake pad produce much more brake dust compare to any other make, even merc or volvo do not produce dats amt of brake dust compare to a BMW.

Sometimes pads with less dust squeal like nails scratching the blackboard (like what marklee bro said). I stick to stock pads because I can't stand the sound.

Bo bian la bro, BMW if no brake dust then not call BMW liao. Ultimate Driving Machine, must have a bit of brake dust to justify mah, dio bo? Try to tahan a bit, I wash mine once a week and so far not too bad. No need to wash every other day

Er.. i dont know if this makes sense. But the stock pads aint that bad. And if you're getting that much brake dust that it requires you to clean it every other day, it probably means you're braking harder then you should be.

Which probably translates to late braking, or unnecessary aggressive driving. I have m3 brakes on my car. Many members here have brembos, etc etc BBKs. No one complains about brake dust. While its a pain in the A.hole to see so much dust, it tells you your brakes are working well.

If you cant stand it, drive slower, thus braking less and lighter. You'll see a difference in the brake dust.

i can vouch for that....

2.0 ltr JDM car... brakes too soft and fade off at high speed braking.... during normal road braking too takes too long to bite... but feels betta control at snail or crawling speed...

for bimmer, very very steady brake at high speed... braking from 180++ to 80 is no fuss at all and still doesnt fade :laughlik: .... but at crawling speed, jerky and can hear faint screeching noise....

how i know.... i was driving JDM about 25 days ago.....

btw, i hv not clean off any brake dust off my so call silver rims..... gun-metal coat, i like!!!!

ok, i have to add, i am now on cross drilled rotors and National race pads, bugger all dust, very clean.

Brake dust is a function of the resins/binders within the pad material and the pad material itself. Many pads use resins that actually vaporise with heat and this may give out soot that darkens the rims. Sometimes, manufacturers mix in a little carbon into the pad material to aid in providing hi-temp friction stability. The carbon also gives you the black sooty appearance during use.

The pad material itself also comes into play. Certain harder materials actually scour the disc and these lead to fine metal filings from the disc being deposited. The brake pads from asean manufacturers may contain asbestos or some other synthetic materials that give it the light grey to dirty white appearance. These pads usually run cleaner. The original pads from BMW (made by Textar or ATE) are black as hell. They possess a higher friction level and are actually made to stop vehicles along the autobhan.. Look at all the european vehicles and you will see similarities..

IMHO, choose your pads wisely. Good high friction pads that produce less dust tend to run at higher temperatures which may lead to disc warpage.. high friction, low temp pads tend to wear fast. Low dust, last long tend to offer poor grip. Good friction, last long is dusty...So how?

Thanks for sharing Rodney. Will call you shortly on changing of pads - I went down last Saturday to check up, and will go down this Sat to change the pads.

Just to share, my stock pads wear out after 12,000km. Anyone wear out faster than me?

the brake dust shields seem to cover the entire interior of the wheels behind the spokes of the rim. so will not be able to see your cross drilled zimmerman brake discs. how?

on a more serious note, will this affect heat dissipation from the brakes? just wondering whether it would somehow be an obstruction to air circulation.

I dun care if can see my drilled rotors or not. Jin, like i said, these used to, and might still come out on production cars from Ford. The FPV's, GT's etc have them, and they have 6 pot calipers and slotted rotors as standard, so i cant see how it will effect cooling. Especially when some cars have hubcaps now that cober the wheel!!
