Window Tinting & Range of Remote Control

Hi guys,

Just found out something interesting yesterday....

The type of Window Tint you use can affect the working range of the remote control. VKool is especially bad (i.e. reduces the range by the widest margin) because it has 'metal' in the film. Hence, VKool is one of the only films you need to make a hole for the ERP unit.

Obviously, no tint extends the widest range but film with no metal components does reduce the range but not as much as those with....

fyi....

Re: Window Tinting & Range of Remote Control

IMO, i would not be too much concerned with range of remote control since its safer to open the doors only when u are next to the car. instead, the reduction of effectiveness of carpark transponders top my concerns.

alos, i read from huper optik's website that it too require a hole for the ERP unit. can anyone confirm?

Which brand of tint has blusih or greenish color instead of black or sort of greyish?

Just want to let the guys know before they purchase their window film..... I didn't know this until yesterday.....

But yes, you are right..... for safety, you should stand by yr car when you open it.... but I don't do it.... but anyway......

The New7,

Thanks for the info.

Re: Window Tinting & Range of Remote Control

I had Huper Optic on my previous car, and I do recall they cut around the in car unit.

Re: Window Tinting & Range of Remote Control

One of my main concerns when I did my tints was that my GPS has to be able to get satellite fixes through the glass. So that pretty much ruled out all films that have metallic content.

In the end, I got Huper Optik ceramic films. No need to cut hole for IU, no problems with remote controls and GPS signals get through perfectly.

Re: Window Tinting & Range of Remote Control

A word of caution:Some carpark transponders may not be detected after installation of V-kool

(Premier range). I have 2 transponders. The one for my home cannot detect after v-kool

installation but the one for my office works alright. In the end had to go back to the installer to

have a small hole cut at the area I place my home transponder.

Chickenbackside ah,
I just bought the GARMIN Nuvi GPS and currently have it on top of my dashboard. I had Vkool on my windscreen. The GPS reception is perfecto, no problemto. Now I need to figure out how to hotwire the GARMIN and yet make it asthetically pleasing :screwedu: otherwise must follow yr setup :)

point the remote & touch ur chin, press the remote.

9 out of 10 brands in the market are metalized film. so i wondor how only vkool can affect the working range of the remote control?:screwedu:

Yup saw this on one of TOP GEAR episode...
He just put the remote against the head and guess what, the car remote is within reach again!!

Hmm.... electro-magnetic field using our brain as the transmitter dish!!

Re: Window Tinting & Range of Remote Control

After installing Vkool, my GPS has lost all reception. Is there a simple solution to this? How about just cutting a small hole to let the signal penetrate?

Re: Window Tinting & Range of Remote Control

V-Kool is metallic, hence it (technically) blocks the signal. If you can identify the location of your GPS antenna, then you can try changing the location. As a last resort, you may still have to cut a small hole, e.g. extreme bottom corner of the windscreen so that it is not obvious.

I use Huper Optik. No hole, no interference. Two years oredi. No problem
