X5 Tow Hitch for Bike Rack

hi

Just wondering if anyone has fixed a tow hitch (2" or 1.75" square size) receiver at bottom rear of the car for purpose of installing a bike rack instead of those Saris Bone which may not be appropriate due to spoiler.

Those original tow hitch from PML is ridiculously expensive. From what i gathered from LTA was as long as the tow hitch is not protruding out when unused, its okay.

Any idea where i can get it supply and install please?

Thanks

Hi dfstan,

I have been looking for a similar setup for my X1, PML dont even bring in for X1s.....
I have written to LTA and their reply was as long as it doesnt protude, and its taken off when bikes are not required for transport, we can fix it.
I have been looking ard too but so far, the best bet is from overseas online shops....

Re: X5 Tow Hitch for Bike Rack

hi whiteonblack, there are few sites on trailer hitch that can order online and shipped it over but its important to get some mechanics know how to install without the risk of bike drop off while driving. also, i'm not too keen on cutting any part of the bumper either. if fixed correctly, it can be hidden and does not violate LTA rules. there must be someone done this before or know where to go to.

are you referring to this bike rack that is ridiculous expensive?

this is the best design in terms of mounting, safety, ease of loading bike and no problem driving at high speed.

only problem is; PDC will sound permanently when reversing

Re: X5 Tow Hitch for Bike Rack

thanks devil angel. that's a beauty! may you pm me the damage by PML on such setup please?

Also, the PDC refers reverse sensor correct? if so, does the setup is smart enough that the reverse sensor is only "permanently" sound when the bike lift is installed and return back to normal sensors working condition when bike fit is removed?

lastly, is it easy to remove the bike lift when not transporting the bikes?

thanks a lot!

Re: X5 Tow Hitch for Bike Rack

Yes.. it does look sturdy and nice.

Hope it fits the X1 as well... Devil Angel, please PM me the details as well... thanks.

Re: X5 Tow Hitch for Bike Rack

yes PDC refers to reverse sensor. when bike rack is removed, everything is as normal, bcos the bike rack actually block the sensor after installed. installing and removing is super easy with just one allen key provided. there's a key lock at the bolt to prevent theft.

this unit is a basic version that comes without rear brake light. brackets provided for VIN if one wishes to display it. it can be slide down for ease to open the back trunk. I've added red & white reflector below the rack for distance warning. there's a 3rd bike extension which I didn't fix it.

if I'm not wrong, last I enquired, full version from PML is about $2,900.

as for X1, you have to check whether it comes with 2 tow hook mounting.

Re: X5 Tow Hitch for Bike Rack

I find it a hassle to using tow hitch. you got to get a workshop to remove the bumper cover to install it.

for the original BMW bike rack, you need to unplug the tow eye cover on your X5 bumper, insert the bolts into the socket and tighten it, that's it. remove and install as you please.

Yup... this rear mount bike rack does fit most if not all bimmers with the 2 tow eyelets/screws (whatever u call them)... even my X1 have them....

This is the "hitchless" design... meaning no need to install towbar where u gotta get a mech to take off bumper etc etc... to install... this one is plug and play... able to take up to 30kg for 2 bikes... (which is safe enough.. a normal MTB is ard 10-12 kg... road bike... even lighter) ... very tempted to get this one...
