X5 vs XC90

Re: X5 vs XC90

'cos if there's only one car... then no choice.

IMHO, if got option, get cheap Japanese MPV for the family (it's going to get dirty etc anyway).
Then get another roadster to hit the road! Wait for the new Z4 coming up in 2009

thinking seriously about the Q7 huh?!

Yeah, sort of. I keep going through these crazy phases of wanting to buy a different car - until the phase wears off and I get back to reality that is.

Thanks to Chickenbackside - I may give a little more thought to the 4.2 Q7 that is available that only has 5 seats. It has a S Line interior package (alcantara leather, special steering wheel etc) - the only one I have seen in the market,, with a sky roof and all the other goodies.

3 downsides for me.

1) Black in colour - too common, attracts the heat and does not look good on a big body like the Q7 IMHO.
2) Previous owner must have chain smoked with the windows up because the smell of smoke inside was overwhelming. It must be baked into the interior (roof lining, seats etc) because I got a headache just sitting in the car for 1 minute. The smell is really, really bad.
3) Car number - 9034. My wife is Cantonese and I don't think that number looks or should I say, sounds too good?

I am discounting the cost of petrol as being a major factor here, because the company pays for it - lucky me. But it is a factor when it comes to resale, so it is in the equation no matter what.

I may end up sticking to my 5 series and wasting my and everyone else time here, but what the heck, I am enjoying looking around and seeing what is out there.

The second hand market is dire for the sellers. Great for a buyer.

Re: X5 vs XC90

By the way Chickenbackside (I cannot believe I am calling someone by this name), the 4.2 version has air suspension which the 3.6 does not have. Would that make the hard ride a little easier for the passengers?

That sky roof is the best thing about the car here in SF. Not sure how much it'll be appreciated in sunny SIngapore. On my rental, there is no way to shut out the sunlight totally as the inner sliding shade is translucent. There is no opaque piece. Maybe you can check the specs out for Singapore bound cars. I foresee the inability to totally shut out the sun could be a bother in Singapore.

I bought a Merc before with the same problem. The thing smelled like an old pub. Told the dealer if he can get rid of the smell PERMANENTLY, I'd buy it. He did. I bought it. The smell did not come back. So, it IS possible.

In all probability, it would make the ride more comfortable. But the way I see it, it is quite necessary for the suspension to be hard to keep roll in check for this mini bus. I drove some American SUV's of the same size with exceptionally comfortable ride. They were almost dangerous to drive. Seriously.

I'm in San Francisco now spending 2 weeks with a Q7.

Impressions are:
1) 3rd row seats are useless. Too upright and no leg room

Me thinks not worth the money.

Actually CB these are factors which I find too, but unfortuantely are endemic across all SUVs. So fortunately for the wallet and unfortunately for some other reasons, the Odyssey was the big time winner in the practicality debate for me.

+1.5...........................

Re: X5 vs XC90

another cheaper and good alternative will be the Stream.

cheap to run, and looks good too....and it is a HONDA

Re: X5 vs XC90

Saw the black 4.2 again, the one with the smoke inside. The dealer had put an air freshner inside, which made absolutely no difference but he did say they could get rid of the smell if we did a deal. Jan 07 model, 27k kms, 5 seater, S Line interior, sky roof, keyless etc - $249k. Deprn = $23k / yr

However, I am convinced black is the wrong colour for this SUV.

Saw a silver 3.6 next door, Dec 06 model, 24k kms, 5 seater, S Line exterior, no roof, no bose sound system, - $198k. Deprn = $18.6k / yr

Then the one I think is the best - 3.6 silver, May 07 model, 11k kms, 7 seater, S Line exterior, running board, sky roof, bose sound system, nappa leather, side n rear roller blinds, but only 18" rims - $226k (before negotiation). Deprn = $20.2k / yr

Or how about a March 07, 740Li, just came in, 22k kms, $230k?

So many choices.

I concur.

I drive a facelifted Odyssey in Singapore so I know it very well. The Q7 pales (a very pale shade of pale at that) in comparison in terms of practicality. It's not even in the same league. It would be hard to live with if the 3rd row seats are supposed to get used at all.

Quality, fit and finish, engine/gearbox, sunroof, auto tailgate...etc all count for squat if everyday, somebody in your family needs to get physically hurt getting in and out of the car.

Have to agree that for a 7 seater, the Odyssey trumps all... space, practicality, nice engine, handling, and price.

Although I hope I never have to take that route...:)

Brummie...
Look at the May 07 vs Dec 06 models... it may mean that the car depreciates 20k in 1/2 year :yikess: (all the S line, roof, sound system are not going to count for a lot in the longer run).

Unless you really like the Q7, driving for a really long time, and don't mind the depreciation because it's not the most popular car out there in terms of resale... quite a few people selling.

740Li is a :cloud9: Although not 7 seater. Somewhere lower than 230k will be right 'cos the depreciation on 7 series quite steep as well, esp with new model coming up late 2008.

You hit the nail on the head when you say I will need to keep the Q7 for a long time. And that is where I know I will have a problem. The thought of keeping the same car for almost 9 years to minimize the depreciation over time, well it just isn't going to happen.

To be honest, the Q7 makes no sense financially and with 2 grown up kids, not a whole lot of sense practically either.

I had kind of discounted the 7 series before because the new model is due shortly, but this 1 year old one came in the same place the Q7 is for sale and I got to take a look. I also can't see me driving to work in a 7 series either, it is a bit OTT.

This madness of wanting to change my 525 has almost run its course.

Based on what I was offered on my 525, despite buying it 4 months old from PMLS at a $20k to $25k discount off new price 2 years ago, in those 2 years of ownership, I will lose $60k to $65k just on depreciation.

That's ridiculous depreciation for a 5 series.
