Of hand, I suspect the following obvious differences.
1. Headlights
2. Dashboard info display and dials
3. Rear seats split ratio
4.
5.

Add on if more differences noticed.

Of course cannot compare lah. 1 series is a hatchback and 3 series is a sedan. Sedan would always look bigger and more prestigious. Anyway, the CC also different. 118/116 is 1.6L whereelse 320 is 2L.

I think the point here is no point comparing, they are different.
Else BMW will not have 1,3, 4(Akan datang),5,6,7 series...used have to 8 too....LOL.

I think that's a bit like saying the Audi R8 = Lamborghini Gallardo. Or Skoda Fabia = VW Polo = Audi A1.

It's almost a universal parts-bin sharing automotive world out there. We just have to live with it, and choose the favorite combination at our acceptable price range. Like AP ROOs. =]

leg room is way way smaller (for 118i). that to me, is the biggest difference maker. you can't improve on real estate (space), but you can always pile on the accessories.

I'm sure the statement is based just on the initial impression of the 3 series.. that is the similarities.. so what do we have.. the front seats, steering wheel, the screen, radio and aircon buttons orientation are generally similar or exactly the same as the 1s.. so my take is.. with the "slight" difference in pricing between the 3s and the 5s since the 3s "shared" so many things with the 1s (except yes the HP, engine and the ever obvious SIZE and etc etc).. skip the 3s and go for the 5s

I'd view the diffirent between 118i & 320i. Found out that the front dashboard, idrive and seat exactly the same. Only rear seat and exterior is difference. And sun roof. Cool...

Well if they didn't do this, we also won't be enticed to buy 1 series. Seriously, the new 116/118 looks nicer than the old 120s hatch. We look fiercer as well than the 320 coupe.
