1st servicing and engine oil change

Dear all bro and sis,

my car is at 17k km now and I haven't serviced since day 1. my salesman told me just follow the car computer which tells me to get car serviced at 20kkm (another 5 months to go).

I used to drive a toyota and i serviced it every 5kkm! I am a bit worried as I am afraid there might be already some engine sludge problem (I felt the jerky and pully feeling of the car when i start moving at traffic light).

I guess I will go PML next week to change engine oil. but will they ask me to do a full servicing? what else need I to change at 1st servicing at PML?

anyway, i am confused that why the car computer only asks me to service my car at 20kkm while most of forumer here strongly recommend to change engine oil at 10k or even 8k km?

many thanks for your kind advice!!:helpp!:

Cheers and Happy new year!!!

Re: 1st servicing and engine oil change

if u tink bmw is so special until normal syn engine oil can last 20,000km, then stick with it.

most of us tink that oil is oil, regardless of car. hence it should be changed every 10,000km.

i change mine every 7-8,000km. i bring my own oil, pml charges around $55 for labour, filter and washer.

happy new year!

p.s.: if u feel jerkiness, maybe bring to r2d to do a flush first before a change cos pml dun do flush. some say got risk since if sludge already there, it may clog up the engine and kill it. but i tink in ur case, should be ok since it is 17000km only. or better yet, ask rod for his professional advice.

Hi, Slater. i guess my style is pretty normal. occasionally rev to 3, always staying within 2 to 3 range. most of time it is city driving, occasionally onto highways..

do you mean 20k is too short for computer to prompt for servicing? or it should have alerted me much earlier?

thanks!

20k for computer to promt 1st servicing is a little too long. plus u do alot of city driving. send it in and ask them why the abnormality during ur oil change/ 1st service. i would be interested to know as well

i got the car from PPSL at 10th month of the car. sales man told me the car never got serviced (it is true after i checked the service book which only stated the pre-delivery check passed).

so when i pushed the button for service info - it says next servicing 5 k km later which is 22k km.

is it abnormal??
thanks

thanks bro for the helpful note. when i press the button to check engine oil info, there are still 3 quarter full (i.e., 1 quarter empty to the max mark).

The worst which could have happened is my salesman reset the service timer before he sold the car without changing engine oil at all? Could it be possible?

thanks!

even if engine oil is full it shld be changed at regular intervals to avoid slugging.

unlikely they will do something like that. ur used car goes through a 72 point check or something. very stringent. will be very pissed if they did such half fug jobs

Re: 1st servicing and engine oil change

Hi,

I was told by PML that the first servicing of new car is at 2000 km where the synthetic engine oil will be changed. following which at about 8000km, needs a top-up. The 2nd servicing will be at 10,000km and thereafter, every 10,000km.

Did I not got this correct?

Thanks.

That's weird...the salesguy who sole me the 525 told me the 1st servicing is 12K, as per the OBC...kinda contradicting, especially coming from the same PML......

but then, I will bring it in for servicing at 5k, afterwhich, every 8k....

its 12k. never heard of PML 1st service at 5k. but if u wanna do oil change prematurely thats fine.

Re: 1st servicing and engine oil change

I called the PML service centre who told me that PML used to set the 1st servicing at 12k but for newer batches, they set it at 25k..that explains why mine never got any service record..anyway, i have booked my service in 2 weeks time.

Hi, C3P0:

my car was registered in early Oct 2008. To be honest, I think servicing bmw at 25k will kill the engine. when i open the engine cap, i can more or less see the oil already become brown color. I will definitely change it soonest.

all the best,

Luckily you have foresight to change oil early. Good one.

When is your servicing? Mine also in 2 weeks' time, I take leave liao, will sit there and make sure they don't wash my car. :D

Re: 1st servicing and engine oil change

Funny thing occurred - called up PML service centre again (wanted to bring the service date earlier), and when they looked my licence number up in their system, it is said it has been serviced once at 10kkm and all parts checked with engine oil changed (4.2 litre) - my salesman at PPSL never mentioned this to me and he told me it had never been serviced... so now the car is 17k km no wonder the computer prompts for next servicing in another 7k km or May 2010....now, do I need to change oil again in two weeks (probably will reach 18k km by then)..

btw, a colleagues just serviced her E90 from PML and i checked the engine cap cover, it looks the same as mine, brown color oil stain on the inside surface of the cap. Guess I worried too much....and you can't tell engine oil needs to be changed by checking the color of the engine cap cover, how do you all think?!

Cheers!!

Re: 1st servicing and engine oil change

Dtcars, I have similar experience with u. My dealer told me car was never serviced, booklet also empty, but Pml check computer and told me it was serviced at 9k.
maybe owner never bring service booklet to PML , during his servicing.

However, my diff with u is that now it promptse for service at 17k.

Btw, if u are not comfortable, just change. Have a peace of mind at a low price. Compared to modding, servicing is still considered cheap. (Stock is best, mod is bad.)
