[Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

Hi everyone,

I drive a 5-year old 320i. Mileage is slightly over 150000km. I had some lethargy issues with the car and brought it to a workshop for a diagnosis. I was advised to do a transmission overhaul as one of the valves in the control unit is very highly pressurised. I was quoted almost $6k.

I did a quick check with a couple of other workshops and they have quoted me very different prices for a full transmission overhaul. One quoted $2500 while the other $4000.

I've resigned to the fact that I should get an overhaul. What I'm concerned about is the very different quotations that I got for the same work. $2500 to $6000 is quite a big difference. I'm not sure what I should do and would appreciate advice on this from anyone who has knowledge about transmission overhauls and perhaps experience of it. Recommendations are welcome too.

Thanks!

or ask workshop to do a breakdown to quote you so you can really see what was quoted to do etc etc???

"was advised to do a transmission overhaul as one of the valves in the control unit is very highly pressurised"
i reckon that the WS had performed some sort of diagnostic test or reading from your ECU before telling you that one of the valve is highly pressurised. and therefore the $6000 quote is to address this issue correct?
As for the other WS that quoted 2500 and 4000, what kind of diagnostic test did they do to give you such a quote?

Re: [Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

why don't do u an ATF flush and change.
couple of hundred bucks damage to the pocket
and see if things improve.

Re: [Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

Calling Pengful!!

Re: [Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

Hw deep is ur pocket??

deep enuf then overhaul lor....

GGN like me... jus change atf and reset gearbox see if it helps....

Re: [Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

On my own E60 with 103k mileage when bought it,
I found it was reluctant to gear change till 4-5k rpm.
I change 6 times of tranny fluid at every 3-5k interval at friend workshop. It does feel smoother BUT......

Problem still there , with oil change it just give better feel and it will be back afterwards,

Recently replaced my mechatronic, everything getting better. I can feel like it was totally different driving experience.

It don't cost cheap @3.5k but for my car it still got 2.5 years to go, it still cheaper than tow truck and more repair cost if delay the repair.

Now i can enjoy it without worry when my tranny is going to cease.

Re: [Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

My 2 cents .....

- You need to let us know the specific fault code so we can give better inputs
- The price varies because some WS think changing the solenoid is ok while others think should change the
mechatronics too while another thinks that the clutch pack should also change on top of everything
- High pressure in one valve vs another valve (and there are many valves) requires different solutions
- ATF change is normally done between 80-120k km depending on how hard the gearbox is whacked everyday. In any
case not more than 8 years.
- Be aware that there are a bunch of procedures for the hardware (and software - often neglected) to do before, during
and after repairs.

Hope that helps .......

i was thinking solenoid = mechatronic till now

Solenoid is only a small parts from mechatronic, mechatronic is actually a manifold to bypass, pressurize certain passage of hydraulic line to actuate gear change.

I got one mechatronic in my hand, for who curious to see actual item can come jurong, i show u.

Re: [Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

I am also having the same problem, workshop did an gearbox adaptation and found that one of the gear (2nd gear) is having high pressure reading, was told likely clutch needs to be change cost @S$4-5k. But currently the gearbox still working fine, was advised to monitor first. Mileage is 75k km.

Re: [Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

What were the symptoms?jerky gears?

Re: [Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

Thanks everyone for all your input!

I probably should have clarified that they did mention that it's a hardware issue due to wear and tear. The mechatronics are fine. The overhaul would involve changing the valves, clutches, gaskets, etc. from what I gather, it's the full hardware overhaul.

With that in mind, I'm guessing the lower quotes are not accurate? And that the $6k is
a fair price for hardware overhaul?

Symptoms: car responds slowly to accelerator. No jerking just no response than sudden acceleration. Especially at slow speed and from mid to high speed. The diagnosis indicates that valves A and C are over-pressurised.

Re: [Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

Say to change the solenoid(7 pieces) include oil filter + ATF as, as common cause of the BMW E-90 6 speed trans, the cost according to Aaron post should be around SGD 1500 or less, problem of jerking resolved

Re: [Advice needed.] Transmission Overhaul

Having the same problem now. What's your gearbox? Gm or ZF?

Hi Eng Soon Auto, how about gm gearbox?

Hi Lesliek,

Unfortunately we do not have as many parts for GM as compared to ZF. However we do have the required Fluids and other parts, do drop us a call or PM for your GM parts as well !
