All about the new 3 series

Hi everyone!

I'm a new driver, just got my license this year and my 320 is arriving on the 22nd. Problem is, I'm a real car idiot, lets see:

- I don't even know how to pump petrol or what type or brand to use.

- I have never washed a car.

- I don't know a damn thing about engines or other mechanics. What are the essentials that every driver should know? In plain english please, if you say rims i have no idea what you mean..heh

- I'm utterly directionally challenged, plus i've never really driven by myself *road hazzard coming your way this month in the guise of a silver 3* :)

I shall be grilling my salesperson when my car is delivered but i thought it would be nice to have an ongoing thread about the new 3 for questions and problems.

Hi mulberri,

Congrats on the new 320i! This is a great place for a newbie, you can learn lots of stuff about cars. Better yet, go to one of the end of month meetups and chat with the friendly folks, you'll learn even more. I only started going to the meetups beginning of the year and only after 3, already learned so much about BMWs, driving, mods, and just cars in general.....cheers!

You are a lucky guy, 1st car already 320i. Think my 1st car had half the capacity of yours, i.e. 1L

Hi,

I was like you when I first got my Bimmer in Canada.
Don't worry about pumping petrol normally the attendants at the station will do it for you. Last time mine was mostly self serve! Washing car, that's another art form in itself.
For driving in Singapore just remember that you should keep to the left side of the road. It'll be best if you could get a patient kaki like a girlfriend to follow you around for the firs tfew weeks. That's what happened to me.
Don't worry BMWs are quite forgiving on first time owners. Great handling characteristics and quite forgiving.

Cheers
Jason

proscar and jaskin,

i'm a girl.. wonder why i'm automatically assumed to be a guy, eeks.

I guess the BMW is a good first car to have, it's suppose to be fairly easy to drive.

I know they have petrol attendants here but is that always the case? at all hours? What about brand and type of petrol, does it matter?

quiksilver,

I wouldn't trust me with your car! :lol2:

Re: All about the new 3 series

Hi,

Girl cannot have girlfriend meh?? :)
Normally most petrol kiosk will have attendants around the clock. Brands... most are the same.Just pump 98 and above can already. Given the current petrol price wars I'll go with the station with the most discount

I should have guessed. No offence to the ladies here, but the give away clues were never wash car, hopeless with directions.

Of course BMW is a good first car to have, the trouble is affording them.

Re: All about the new 3 series

We all learn along the way.

I had the same problems as you had before.

Welcome on board mulberri! Hope to see you at our next meetup soon.

Re: All about the new 3 series

Since you haven't washed a car, and practice makes perfect, allow me to volunteer my car for practice!!

Seriously, do watch out for other cars that give you door dents when you park outside... it can be heartbreaking.

Cheers!

Perhaps beemmeup would like to do a demo?
It'll be even better if we can have it on video so that all brudders and sisters here can learn too. :lol2:

On parking next to other cars, I always choose to park at the sides instead of between cars, whenever possible.
And also, make sure you leave enough space for your neighbours to get in/out of their cars.
But still, it happens. :oooops:

*sigh...* you're one lucky gal to own an E90 as your first car.
Let me assume your dad gave it to you as a gift, can I be your daddy's god son? :inlove:

Re: All about the new 3 series

Welcome to the forum and I hope u have an enjoyable time here. Do join us for our meetups too, one is coming up this Sun!

Cheerio!

Re: All about the new 3 series

if its any consolation, i've been driving ever since i got my licence 2 years ago and i still don't know how to pump petrol on my own...

Re: All about the new 3 series

jaskin,

True ;) too bad i haven't got one then.

proscar,

directions maybe (although my brother is probably worst than me), but what does car washing experience have to do with gender? :ehhh:

ryan,

thanks! if i can find the way, hehe..

beemeup,

sounds tempting :yummie: but i'll pass. By the way i saw this 4 in one car spray thingy that claims to wash and wax a car without water?

seven_heaven,

I'm currently on a quest to find the emptiest parking lot in orchard! Right now i'm liking paragon cuz it doesn't have the multilevel round thing like in taka.
And you're very perspective! I'll ask dad if he's in the market for a godson.. :lol2:

Re: All about the new 3 series

louis,

this is so silly, but do you leave your key in the ignition when you pay for the petrol?

I think you should, if you wanna lose your car...
Welcome to the Forums!

Re: All about the new 3 series

yes OBVIOUSLY i thought of that, i'm just trying to get a feel of what people do here. When i'm in the car with other people, they leave the key in the ignition, even when no one is in the car, so i was thinking about that.

Re: All about the new 3 series

gosh, exams? which cursed institution are u studying in?

i personally just leave my key in the ignition because i usually use the esso/shell cards to pay for my petrol so i never have to leave my car's side as payment can be done at the pumps. also, another benefit of having the only manual Z4 is that i don't think the thief will be able to get away even if he changed number plates... assuming he can drive a stick in the first place.

btw, the wheelock car park doesn't have the circular ramps too. and as for car washing, i actually find it highly therapeutic and it also gives me a chance to inspect my car for any dents/dings etc.

You might want to check out the Borders car park. It is more spacious than the paragon one.
