Don't think he's bought it yet. He mentioned that he was going to test-drive it.

What's your opinion on the 997 Turbo?

Re: Anyone driven the new Porsche 991 C2S

So I test drove the red 991 Carrera S at Stuttgart yesterday...

Limited round the block test drive on AYE and then back. Moist roads. Cornering done on the high way exists and entrance plus Hoy Fatt Rd.

Concerns regarding the steering feel are true. It is lifeless, but having said that, it's not like the M3 excels in this department. The M3 is really quite bad for a hydraulic steering system. AMG has better feel!I really liked the feel from my S2000 and 987.2 Boxster S. The best steering feel is Jaguar XKR.

Nimble and sharp despite growing in size. I am surprised the turn in is as sharp as the 987.2 Boxster. Very chuckable little car feel. Doesn't has the rear heavy feel of the 997. It feels very mid engined.

Very good brakes. Typical Porsche. Under assisted and little free play.

With PASM, the car is well damped and comfortable on the AYE. Road noise is at GT levels. Slightly quieter than M3. There's a problem, read on later.

I still maintain, Porsche makes the best double clutcher out there, but and a big BUT I think it could be the weight of the car making it less stressful on the transmission than the DCT of the big fat M3. The PDK in the Panamera was more hesitant. Left in auto mode, it is smooth and natural. A step up from my 987.2 PDK which was already brilliant. Never once could I provoke a jerk or trip up with the gear box.

Induction noise is loud! Sounds strange and unnatural. Will be better without. It is so loud that it almost drowns out the exhaust. Some drone on load. It will get tiring on long journeys. Road nice has been replaced with engine noise. Some will love it. I didn't. Sports exhaust is great as usual but too damn expensive. Lots of overrun spluttering and pops.

Straight line performance seems lacklustre. Lots of noise and not as much go as the impression it gives. Left lane overtaking seemed to be not much better than the M3 DCT. Just doesn't feel that fast or dramatic as it should have been on paper. The Carrera S might have a slight edge over the M3 but the Carrera base will at best par it and I am not so sure at higher speeds.

Options wise, pathetic. Typical Porsche again. $1000 for rear wiper, $10,000 for Sat Nav on a half million dollar car! WTF!?!? No high end sound system, or CD changer. No front parking sensor, etc. Cheapo! Potential deal breaker. By the time I am done speccing the car, it is closer to $700,000 with COE.

If you are interested, I think rear head room for passengers is worse than the 997. This is really hobbits only seats. Cheap feeling fake leather permeates the cabin. Switch gears and buttons are clacky and toy like. Premium but not luxurious enough.

All aluminium construction also means repair cost will be sky high when it comes to the unfortunate event of a bad accident.

Half million dollar question: Is it better than the E92 M3 DCT Competition?

The Carrera S, yes, BUT it is a lot more expensive. The Carrera S should be compared to the M6.
The Carrera base, NO. Why?

The M3 offers more for less money. More practicality, more luxury, more options, more kit, similar driving dynamics. Which has been core to the M cars. You are really paying a lot more for that Porsche badge.

991. Buy it if you like Porsches and money no object. Don't buy it if you like cars and prefer to get your money's worth.

I might consider the 991 C2S but I have a few months to mull over it. I am not entire convinced if I should. I am not a brand slut and I pledge no allegiance to any car brand. I evaluate a car based on it's price, merits and flaws then I decide to buy or not.

Pretty comprehensive review :) Cheers

What's your opinion on the 997 Turbo?

I'm assuming you are referring to the pdk verison, especially in the turbo S spec (The older tiptronic versions pale by far in comparison). It is a phenomenal car. Massive acceleration and handling. The pull from the car on full throttle just literally blows you away LOL! And to be honest, it is a pretty good time to start looking for a 2nd hand one towards the end of the year. Prices will fall substantially given that the 991 turbo will be coming out next year. This is of course assuming you don't mind an older model (some people want to have the latest model and this will negate any consideration of a 997).

But having said that, and this is just my personal preference, I would take a 2nd hand GT3, GT3RS or GT2 over the turbo. Clar you already have 2 everyday M cars. Why not pick up something truly racecar-like.

There are a couple on sale at sgcarmart. Try and whack them on the price.

E.g.,
Used Porsche 911 Car for Sale in Singapore, AutoInc Sports - sgCarMart

Used Porsche 911 Car for Sale in Singapore, Rev-On Motor - sgCarMart

I am usually very shallow and automatically prefer the newer model, but with the 911, i think i might just break the tradition :D I am not big on GT3 cos i don't like big spoilers and stripped out interior. My fat ass likes to be pampered with leather and stuffs :p

How is the steering feel of the Turbo considering that it has AWD? How about the power delivery? I read that it has turbo lag?

Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with the turbo. Was not a fan until the latest pdk and turbo s iterations which are blisteringly fast. Acceleration-wise, i personally am not very impressed with any carrera or m3 or even a normal GT3. Not that it's not fast, just not ballistic. I never drove the turbo at very high speeds so i can't comment on whether it's much more stable than a carrera s or GT3, even with the 4WD system in place. But for me the gut-wrenching acceleration of the turbo, its comfort level, and everyday useability over a GT3/2 are its main selling points.

Oh, and steering feel is as good as any 997 carrera (barring the GT series).

Wah! Second hand, no sports exhaust, no sports suspension, no sports seats, no full leather interior still asking $540k???
That's one of the problems of buying a second hand Porsche. It's got to be exactly optioned as you want it, otherwise factory options such as the sports suspension, leather interior, etc cannot be added on later....

Just a point to note: differently optioned carreras do drive differently. E.g., a pdk model with sports chrono and without are quite different animals.

C2S is categorically off my list probably for the rest of my life.

I have not driven the 991 yet....

the axle hop in the 997 .......my C4S do not have this issue

Yes - the car it is too quiet. My Boxster PDK sounds better

I love my RS60 sports exhaust too. From 4500 rpm, it screams in a vwry rough manner. I heard the exhaust is adapted from the GT3. Very different from the more bassy M exhaust.
