Hi guys, is it true that 5W50 is better for PFL E90? I was advised by my WS that its better for my '06 320i. He claims better mileage and prolongs my engine. True?

Re: Anyone using 5W50 for their E90?

me drivin E60... using 5W50...
WS advice... juz my personal observation:
1) mileage dropped 100km per tank
2) engine oil top-up reduced 1x top up.
3) car behaviour changes..
4) Acceleration no more 'torque' feel

P.S. might be subjective to individual car age n conditi

Re: Anyone using 5W50 for their E90?

5W50 good for F1 cars!

0W40 or 5W40 very atas even for M series.

NA ///M use 60wt oil.

Re: Anyone using 5W50 for their E90?

Better protection yes but not better mileage, as its a much thicker oil.

I think 0w 5w are all winter ratings , on how "fast" the oil can be heated from a super cold start and get it running ,

And in SG context , it is negligible, but those digits after the 'w' plays a role on how thin/thick it is

I might be wrong though

Re: Anyone using 5W50 for their E90?

I think you should change WS if they said that you.

The only use case I can think of for an e90 to use 5w50 is when you have low oil pressure and just want to get by ........

That's one thick oil ........

Re: Anyone using 5W50 for their E90?

better only in terms of protection. Better mileage is not true as compared with *w-40.
For mine, mileage drop about 10-15% per tank.

Re: Anyone using 5W50 for their E90?

Hmm... for my very first servicing at BVO, they used OWS 5W50. Mine's a 2007 E90. I didn't ask much as I thought they would know what's best, so far, I've been happy with it.

Until the next oil change....

Re: Anyone using 5W50 for their E90?

I also did my servicing at BVO about why they using 5w 50 for our engine, His mechanic reply is because our e90 eat engine oil so 5w50 better.thinking of using 5w40 for my nxt servicing at another ws.

Re: Anyone using 5W50 for their E90?

its a thicker oil...better for high mileage cars. hotter temperature. protects older engines n high mileage engines better. thats it. not simi eats engine oil.

thicker oils take longer to warm up etc as well.

Re: Anyone using 5W50 for their E90?

5 bottles(quartz) should be okay per servicing

Search for mxtrading , somewhere at ubi .
Which brand is entirely up to you , you can try amsoil though
