Re: BBKs from April Meetup

so from all the different manufacturers.....
any difference on performance? value for money?

of course there are slight differences in performance, however, all are significant upgrades over the stock.

As for the issue of value for money, it depends on what you are looking for. This is a rather subjective issue. The most cost efficient upgrade is to get the fronts only in my opinion.

Amongst all those pix u hv seen above, for a full set up of similar sizes ( front and rear ) then UUC is the cheapest, followed by Stop Tech , AP Racing and Endless..

Performance is undoubtedly a quantum leap over stock brakes in terms of stopping distance and fade resistance

Cheers

1. Wil's UUC....Front 330mm ( soon to be 355) and Rear 328
5. Barry's Front 330mm

Now will each owner of the BBK please stand up to verify those numbers above?
I am bout to claim some prizes......swee2x....

Yup!!!

Mine is UUC front 330mm (Going to 355mm very soon) & rear is 328mm......sweex2.... :cloud9:

Mr Jack,

As a sponsor to the BBK competition by having your car featured, willingly or unwillingly, u are hereby disqualified by participating in this competition.

As a penalty, u are ordered to buy all members of BMW.SG a ice lemon tea during the next meetup!

Thank you and have a good day.

since the rears are limited to 328mm......the front is the end where varable sizes are available......

ok... now going from the 'smallest' 330mm to the 'largest' 380mm and the 'fixed' rear 328.., which would be the best balance bias?

imagine a 380 front with a 328 rear?!?!

or an almost equal 330 front and 328 rear.......

and then you have the other sizes inbetween!

aiyo...how to choose....

also when a BBK is fitted....does it affect the ABS? and brake pump?

Who says rear rotors are limited to 328mm??? Duh!!!

Stoptech rears are 355mm!! U want??

My setup now is pretty close in size 330mm F & 328mm R but the piston size for the front & rear calipers are diff in size to maintain the brake bias.....front pistons are bigger dan the rears....

Same goes for Jack's Stoptech BBK setup!!

380mm are pimps but no $$ to buy.......

WTH!?!?!?!??!?! 380mm and 12 POT?!?!?!

W-O-W.

Btw how much are brembo BBKs as compared to AP-Racing or Stoptech ones?

For E46M3:
StopTech is retailing about USD 4995 ( 4 pistons all same size Front and Rear 355mm rotors all round)
AP Racing bout SGD 8.5K ( 6 piston Front 355mm rotors and 4 piston rear caliper but using back the stock rotor) so essentially if u wanna change rear rotors, would cost you another SGD1k.
Brembo Grand Turismo is retailing bout USD 5.5K (4 pistons all round, Front 355mm but rear 330 if I aint wrong but surely smaller than front)

So relatively speaking, price wise AP is most expensive then Brembo and Stop Tech

Ahh, i see. That's rather relieving to hear. Thinking of getting some Brembos. BTW you have any idea what advantages the 8-pot front calipers have over the 4-pot one?

By using more pistons, they spread the pressure of braking force over a larger area of the disc, thereby reducing hot spots and increasing braking power. In other words, it provides a much better brake modulation.

So, more pistons means:
1. More evenly distributed pressure on the pads,
2. Better cooling action of the pads, because of more airflow behind the pad's metal support
3. Less stress factor on the caliper itself
4. More clamping action resulting in more braking power due to the presence of more pistons
5. Firmer pedal feel, no fade.

Having said that, however, a 6 piston caliper (with small piston sizes) is not as powerful as a 4pot caliper (with large piston sizes).
This is because of the braking force over the disc area isn't as much hence hot spots will go up and braking power becomes less efficient.

FYI, usually a BBK with alot of pistons, say 10 and above may have multiple brake pads. For example, a 12 piston Tarox BBK has 4 smaller brake pads per caliper as opposed to the usual 2 pads per caliper..

So, wot's tempting you now ? :yummie:
