Best semi-slick?

Re: Best semi-slick?

1. Line
2. Braking point
3. Consistency
4. Use the lat & long 'G' to determine where I can increase the speed

sounds about right. keep it smooth. consistent grouping of your time is more impt than one fast lap n then die off.

what car? the new exotic

It's a new car, but the model is not really new. Just not a lot of them end up actually getting tracked... come to think of it, have never seen one being run properly at SIC. Very capable car though, and driver's good. Don't want to be accused of raising unwanted attention for the effort - jinxing it, or making other drivers of the same model look bad by comparison, but if and when it happens it won't be missed and the trackers will know of it for sure. It's not Lambo though

Simon, I'll start a new thread to answer your questions, instead of taking multiple threads off topic...

I have a very good mate that will be possibly taking his GTO to Sepang- and he aint a bad driver (has had a lot of coaching from some good trainers)- but he wants to race a pesky LFA first. I reckon he would be good for a low 2.20 something as well.... would be great to data log the run.

Ok. Sorry for going off-topic fellas!

That's ok.. I'll round it up with last OT hahah...

Nice..talk about fancy cars...yeah gimme a call mate and let's grab some data off those rarities!

The thing about really expensive cars is that very often their value actually starts to limit the true driving experience. There are so many guys with great cars that even after 10 trackdays, still tip toe around for fear of stone chips, wheel damage, servicing costs, touching the wall, etc. Electronics full on (dead dynamics), 80% driving, to where the entire lap is completely on rails. I always suggest to them that they get a cheap track car like a stripped out cayman R or S (only 1/20-30th the combined cost of their road cars) and then drive the crap out of it without fear, because near, at, and slightly beyond the limit is where 80% of real learning takes place. What's learned there helps at all other tracks, in any car.

Electronics full on, 80% on rails, worried about servicing costs. Mate you are talking about me in all my cars!!!! BTW I am seriously considering driving the GTR in auto mode!!!!!

Re: Best semi-slick?

Yeah auto mode is A-ok if it lets you focus better on basics first. When you're really comfortable and repeatable on those basics and move to pushing for time, you can switch to manual mode for engagement and to at least keep some familiarity with ballpark shift points, downshift timing, in case you get back to a manual later :) Modern systems do a great job (probably even better than humans) in most cases anyway.

Considering you and many of the gang are up at SIC often, it might be a better solution to get a couple of trackcars and share them. Risking many 100s of K of value, spending 10s of K on maintenance, for performance that tops out at somewhere around what a 50 - 100K trackcar would, doesn't make sense. With a trackcar you get much better feel, lower $ risk, lower physical risk (safety systems), much lower running costs, willingness to push limits and learn better - it all makes sense. Allows you to keep your street cars at max comfort, full warranty, max reliability, max parking accessibility, max uptime, higher resale value..

I'll be going down the trackcar route soon after seeing all road car guys who track, suffer the same problems, without exception. Got some connections for free storage and crew which makes the decision easier.

Re: Best semi-slick?

^ Was discussing just this issue with Protege the other day... :)

My dilemma lies with the fact that I like my fast road car (Evo), but I can't really justify owning it as a daily driver if I didn't take it at the track. Yes, I drive like a granny on the street. So if I had a track car (gotta learn to drive manual first *cough*), it would make a lot of sense to sell the Evo to buy an MPV (yeah, I'm a dad) as it would be very hard to justify driving a slightly uncomfortable (ok, v uncomfortable), slightly inconvenient (half-size boot and super-size turning radius) and slightly beng (ok, very beng) Evo, daily.

I hate MPVs (and other appliance-like cars). I don't want to look at one daily or drive one daily. Will grow old very quickly, lah. I'm convinced.

On the flip side, I like my car cos it's dual use - where I can take out the babyseat, swap out the exhaust, put on the racing pads, slap on the semi-slicks... and take it to SIC. And I like owning, driving and staring at it daily.

I can't say the idea of having a track car doesn't appeal to me though...

beta be careful, u might end up at T15 n T1 in 5th gear, ie gears dont auto drop

Re: Best semi-slick?

Shaun,

You definitely raise an interesting point.

But I guess for me rather than just pure timing, its more about learning what my limits are in my daily driver. Its kinda fun toodling along slowly in Singapore in the exact same car that you can push at a race track.

Knowing that there is a lot more that the car can give you as well just sends immense pleasure down my spine. And its just plain fun to sit in front of the steering wheel of a car on the way to work that you also stare at through a helmet and push to a level that you know 70% of other owners of the same car will never experience.

And as for auto mode, mate, I think that it may well be something I will do initially as I have never had the pleasure of running an auto at the track and this may really give me a lot more time to fully concentrate on the rawa basics....

Mate, the auto on the GTR is amazing. Based on what I have seen, when I leave it in auto and I drive aggressively in Race mode, the gears will actually down shift aggressively and auto blip without me engaging the paddles (I think... or my imagination is getting the better of me). Really amazing stuff.

Yeah you are super chill bro... but you drive way above 80% on the track mate... i am still 70% tops.... aircon I dun dare use in the GTR though as it will probably nuke the car.

Who told you that?? I recall auto mode in the GTR dropping gears, just like in the Evo X and all other modern auto sports boxes in the last decade.

This coming PCS trackday are you taking Harold's Pbox or mine? :D

Re: Best semi-slick?

on track, Evo X in S-Sports full auto mode will shift better than 99% of the human population

on the streets, its altogether different story though

Maybe you can get a big comfy sedan instead of an MPV.. I dunno.. something big, smooth, cheap like a 6 cyl Cefiro, Camry, Accord? You won't grow old if every month or two you're up at SIC driving your much quicker, much more dynamic and taxing trackcar! You might even get younger mate hahhah

Trackcars don't need to be full manual. They can be sequential manual, or paddleshift pneumatically actuated sequential manuals with all the failsafes that paddleshift sportscars have :) Very high quality stuff available these days for reasonable cost.

On the flip side, I like my car cos it's dual use - where I can take out the babyseat, swap out the exhaust, put on the racing pads, slap on the semi-slicks... and take it to SIC. And I like owning, driving and staring at it daily.
Swap out the track suspension for baby's comfort? heheh

If you shared one with Kuvesh and/or Kelvin, it would be just around 30K each, plus running costs. All raw, all learning...run under 2:20 :D

Really wasn't talking about anyone specific, esp not you cos your laptimes are far above 80% laptimes and your handling isn't dead despite electronics on. Higher end electronics have very fine control, unlike the cheaper stuff on lower end cars which must be turned off to un-kill the car.

Makes sense too man, just that if one ends up beating on the road car very regularly (say 12 - 18 times a year, all out) to where the running costs can already buy a trackcar, it might start to make less sense than say tracking the road car 4 times a year and being relatively gentle on it :)

Re: Best semi-slick?

i sux with kart really. cant fit the sititng positions no matter how i try. back aches all the time. short people syndrome.

Re: Best semi-slick?

Arthur, yes I said it at the start, but then you have to admit you've found it all to be 100% true yeah? Plus fitness and weight loss :D

===

Jeremy...already told you test driving karts fit to other individuals of significantly different height and weight will give you a completely wrong picture. The higher performing a vehicle is, the more critical ergonomics is. It is entirely possible to customize everything properly for you...
....but then you told me to get a life lol

Ages 5 - 60 with widely varying heights and weights, all kart. Anyone can be fit properly :) Just takes a bit of time and effort. How.. want anot? You'll be deadly with your low weight and low drag heheh.

===

Depending on kart and track spec..who wants to pull 2.2 - 2.8 G at a high frequency and run 95 - 140 km/h, millimeters off the ground? Accelerate at 0.7 - 1.2 G 50 laps in a row? I do! No mirrors, so max situational awareness required. Large fields, high closing and opening rates longitudinally, but especially laterally. High loads requiring high levels of fitness. Fine touch high frequency control, 0 electronics, full driver control and skill. F3 performance or more, in a much cheaper package with much lower running costs.

Re: Best semi-slick?

These karts can to 140km/h?? They don't have a safety cage around the cockpit. What if another kart crash onto you? Is flipping over common in karting? I've seen some horrible kart accidents. One kart on top of the other type. And I'm all skins and bones, despite my nick 'Machoman'. Also curiously, do these kart have LSD? If not, why? What about those F3 formula cars? I'm bringing this thread off topic again. Hehe
