Best way to change out the Run Flats ?

Hi guys

My front types looks like its time to replace them. Current using Pirelli Run Flats.

What's the best way to replace to normal types ?

Is there any issue to mix Run flats at rear types ( given they are still good ) and regular tyre star front ?

Re: Best way to change out the Run Flats ?

What's the best way to replace to normal types ? = Is there even a special way? The usual jack machinery, tools, etc :)

Is there any issue to mix Run flats at rear types ( given they are still good ) and regular tyre star front ? = I do not think so.

However, always try not to have too wide a varied dry/wet grip characteristics between the rear & front tyres. If differs, ensure the rear has better dry/wet grip (for RWD) over the front. IMO.

Thanks for the response.

My preference would be to change all tyres to regular ones. Any tyre shops would take in the Run flats since they are still good ?

Same same as I never used RFT in my past 'power' rides.
Well somehow now I stayed with RFT on my bim but chose the best RFT available at point of change (since 4th Gen is no longer as bad as they used to be)... just slightly not as good in e wet as compared to the top of the cream non-RFT (but we shouldnt be driving too fast on public road in the wet in the first place :p) but still better than most 'uncle' tyres i.e. those super good mileage ones

RFT or non-RFT = Ultimately is to each his/her own, yea :)

Hi
Care to advise which is the best of the best RFT ? Is it also very noisy compared to regular types ?

Re: Best way to change out the Run Flats ?

Hi wira,

"Is it also very noisy compared to regular types ?"- Compared to regular tyre, the answer is definitely a yes. However and IMO, compared to non-RFT tyres from the Extreme Performance category, it is not. Ultimately IMHO, this is subjective and really depends on individual.

"Care to advise which is the best of the best RFT?"- I usually follow the below 2 sites (100% read any neutral test review) and consider all characteristics e.g. wet grip, dry grip, cost, etc... and make the final decision. I only go for the Max Performance as bare minimum, anyway I believe there is no RFT in the Extreme Category.

a) http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=MP
b) Passenger Car Summer Max Performance Tyres Tyres | the online tyre guide

Anyway, the below will be my personal selection of Non-RFT and RFT* , till new ones come into the market.

Max Performance Tyres*
Non-RF
1st Choice = Michellin PSS
2nd Choice = GY AS2
3rd Choice = Michelin Pilot Sport 3 PS3

Note: This tyre test had a heavy weighage = 2013 Summer Tyre Buying Guide | the online tyre guide

RFT*
1st Choice = Continental SportContact 2 SSR Run Flat
2nd Choice = Bridgestone Potenza S001 RFT
3rd Choice = Pirelli P Zero Runflat

Extreme Performance Tyres
Non-RF
1st Choice = Bridgestone Potenza RE070
2nd Choice = Bridgestone Potenza RE11
3rd Choice = Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec

RFT
- The wet grip is too dangerous to even consider IMHO.

Trackdays Tyres - Only when w/o regard to cost and mileage
Non-RF
1st Choice = Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08R
2nd Choice = Nitto NT01 (mileage poorest of these 3 choice)
3rd Choice = Michelin Pilot Sport Cup (wet grip poorest of these 3 choice)

* will change in future as new RFT enters the market and it is purely my own view and can vary with others

Thanks for sharing baby1m.

I am needing to start shopping for new tires too. Rft or non-rft? Havent decided.

Re: Best way to change out the Run Flats ?

Wira,

How come you lost only front ones (and not the rear ones esspecially when bimmers are RWD)

Baby 1M,

Thanks for your useful replies.

Re: Best way to change out the Run Flats ?

Tire wear is due to alignment settings and driving styles. If tires are not rotated frequently the front will wear more than the back.

Re: Best way to change out the Run Flats ?

I would say RFT is the way to go. I had two punctures in my driving experience of more than 15 years. One was nasty on the expressway non-RFT on a rainy night.

Second one was 70km/hr road normal day RFT.

Based on these two, I will always recommend RFT if you are normal road user and not too much into technicalities. Nothing NEW, just my 0.02$

Re: Best way to change out the Run Flats ?

If it is alignment issue, agreed. But what I have observed is for FWD, comparitively it is always the front tyres. RWD, always the rear tyres.

Re: Best way to change out the Run Flats ?

hi,

i AM THINKING of sticking with RFT, and now deciding between:

(1) Continental - ContiSportContact 5 Run Flat; Tyre Size: 225/45 R18 95Y
(2) Pirelli - Cinturato P7 Ecoimpact Run Flat; Tyre Size: 225/45 R18 91V

Cheers.
