Bilstein rebuilds

Out of curiosity, does anyone here send their bilstein coilovers for rebuilds like the center in Socal? Is there one in asia? Better still, in Singapore?

Example here: Bilstein

What do you guys do for worn coilovers? Change new ones? :yikess:

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

*camp here cos I'm curious too*

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

I guess no one has really had any problems with their Bilsteins so far. Either that or the Bilsteins only wear out say 4-5 years from installation? Which by then most people would have either sold it off or changed to a new set.

To ship the entire kit there and then to ship it back would have easily set you back $500, not including the labour and the downtime (since most have thrown away thei originals or sold it off).

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

Seems like such a (carbon footprint) waste to just throw the COs away when it can be rebuilt? Obviously USA is too far away to send to, but I was hoping that a service center is available in Asia... that'd make it somewhat economically viable.

Considering that PSS9 are going for $3500 minimum and euro dollar is getting stronger.......

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

I'm running PSS9 for MINI Cooper S and it costs ard $3500 for a set for us. I'm almost certain it costs ard the same for bimmers too??

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

It think it costs far less than 3500 for Bimmers in general

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

i confirmed its definitely below 3K for PSS9 on my 320i some 6 months ago. price included installation + alignment. Didn't know its that expensive for Mini.

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

You could probably get them done in AUS, not as far away.

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

My mistake. My price includes installation. PSS9 for MINI costs the same as for 3 or 5 series. But it does cost about $3200++ currently. I just checked price with stockist.

Phil: Thanks a lot mate!! You're a life saver!

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

I heard from a friend who drives DC5 TypeR with Ohlins DFV Coilovers. He said the local agenda whom he bought from (a little shop at/inside MAH motor who is the local agent for Ohlins) will help him send back (air freight) the system to Japan for rebuild.

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

I reckon they at least need to go back to a reputable shop who does race car mods etc. There will be hundreds in AUS that could do it. Probably do a special revalve or something as well, modded coilovers, ftw.

Some suspension shops just do reconditioned shockies, replace oil and crap like that.

I gotta tell you though, will be a long time before you wear them out chief.

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

Thanks for all the helpful advice, including the PM!

I've found the source of my "problem". The last time I went for a wheel alignment, I went to soften the settings (think it was 7F/6R) to better preserve the absorbers for longer lasting life.

That was a mistake. It created a false sense of inadequate damping feeling which lead me to believe that my absorbers were getting worn.

Yesterday, I was at a exhaust shop to sort out a squeaking problem on my SS, and I reseted the settings to 5F/4R. And now the car handles the bumps and corners like it should, firmly planted.

Cheers guys! Your advices have been invaluable. :)

bro, if i am not wrong, it is advisable that the settings on the front be firmer than the rear.

quoting TripleM:
Yah I ran 1 setting lower in the rear....
As u know bmw cars in general tend to understeer ( despite RWD ) and as far as safety is concerned, caught in U-S situation is better than in O-S situation. For those who like to have a bit of fun, O-S is very much preferred. I personally hate U-S, it's sh*t feeling.

Outta factory...weight balance is already achieved. And if you notice, bmw cars rear susp set up have alot more negative cambers then the front. At least by half to 1 degree.

This is not helping anything but continually causes U-S.
So you can play with many things to either reduce the U-S or to induce more O-S.

Quick way ( after u hv done arb n coilovers with damper adj ) is to stiffen your rear ARB and run lower setting on the damper, higher tire pressure... By doing this, you will induce more O-S feel.

No one shuld induce more U-S but to reduce it further...few things u can do
Lower tire pressure, soften the ARB n dampers...

To combine all these, I dont mean to suggest on PSS9 for eg, you run +3 at rear, and +9 at the front....I think it's way too far apart...
Maybe a 2-3clicks apart max and keep playing till u achieve the desired levels...
But trust me, till the end, u will find all these settings become like eh, not workign anymore....

Go to the thread titled 'MY PSS9' and have a read...

Re: Bilstein rebuilds

I'm running softer at the front because I'm a front wheel drive car. Harder setting at the rear will help FR cars turn in better.

Cheers!
