Can anyone advise does all preFL E90 comes with bluetooth pairing function ?
Is it an optional feature ?

Re: Bluetooth Pairing

if you have the usb/aux in option, bluetooth should be able to be enabled just by buying some hardware and programming the car.

after programming, you should be able to see a "TEL" option when you press the menu on your HU.

3 options.

1. go to one of the workshops and pay a 4 digit sum for the entire package (hardware and programming). cost is about half from what PML charges for the retrofit

2. buy hardware yourself from stockist/ebay and find a workshop with the proper equipment to do programming for slightly more than $100.

3. buy hardware from stockist and programming cable from ebay. find the necessary software online and do your own programming.

I went with option 3 but so far not successful. radio can pair with my phone and make/receive calls but i'm not able to hear the other party via car speakers. may go to one workshop to try the programming and see if they can make it work. if cannot may mean that my usb/aux in/bluetooth module is defective. :(

edit: the necessary hardware to add on costs less than $100. but stockists here do not hold the parts so i had to order them through one stockist to be shipped in from germany.

Yes. I'm that person. :). U r?

I got the hardware for abt 40euros. Still need to buy extra cables n such though which came up to another 10-15 bucks.

So in summary, this retrofit can be done for abt 200 IF u already got the USB/aux in option installed in ur car since the control module is already there.

Haha... Good to see that you are still DIYing...

I'm Ryan, went by nick Ryan back in the Mazda forum, used to drive a velocity red sedan.

Anyway, I went for the lazy way out by using a belkin aircast bluetooth adaptor to the aux-in. Cheaper at $110, plug and play too.

sorry, dun ring a bell. may recognise your face if i've met you previously at the meetups though. :)

my car came with the garmin gps option and technically phone can be connected via the gps unti. however i hardly use the GPS and it's always stowed away in the car. so being able to retrofit a OEM solution and use the steering wheel controls as well as voice commands is more appealing to me.

Re: Bluetooth Pairing

That's a long time ago indeed.

yes, OEM solutions that make use of the otherwise white elephant buttons is the most appealing.

so what are you going to DIY next?

yeah, the mazda 3 was quite some time back.

I'm still trying to see how i can make the bluetooth phone work. as mentioned in my earlier post, I've managed to program the car and get the phone paired. can use the steering wheel controls to pick up calls as well. but all this is useless if i cannot hear the other party. I may go to a workshop to get them to re-program for me instead.

Since I bought the programming cable already, I also did a small software mod to the car. My car came with manual aircon and the circulation button is always off whenever the car is started from sleep (more than 16 minutes). So i've coded the car to have the button always on. at least will no longer have to smell exhaust fumes when i forgot to set the circulation mode again. :p

Re: Bluetooth Pairing

Finally got the bluetooth and voice commands to work. All in all cost less than $200 to complete this retrofit. :D

if your car already comes with the USB/aux in option, the retrofit will cost less than $200.

If not, the cost will be much higher since the bluetooth phone requires the ECU which also provides the USB/Aux in option. this ECU will cost about 600 to 800 from BMW but you can find used ones on ebay for half the price.

Anyway, what's required is the following hardware

microphone - order from stockist (2 to 3 weeks)
bluetooth antenna - order from stockist (2 to 3 weeks)
antenna cable - buy from ebay (2 to 3 weeks)
wiring for mic - buy from sim lim tower
pin connectors for mic wiring - order from online electronic store. BMW uses a specific type of pin connector so using other types from sim lim will not fit properly

programming cable - buy from ebay (if you intend to do programming yourself)
programming software - buying the cable should come with it. can also download online.

I read online that cars in US manufactured before march 2009 will have the mic and antenna wirings already pre-installed. Not sure if this applys for our local models. Anyway the mic and antenna wirings and pin connectors cost less than $20.

once hardware have all arrived, need to run mic wiring from boot to driver side map light compartment and then do the necessary wiring connections to the ECU.
car will need to be programmed as well to add the option code.

the whole installation and programming should take no more than 2 hours to complete. I took a much longer time cos I encountered problems with programming.

Once it's done you will be able to use the steering wheel controls to make calls. however the phone button on the steering wheel only will call the last dialed number. your phone book will also be download to the radio as well and you can browse for the number to call. the radio can store phone profiles for up to 4 different phones.

oh, you can also use voice commands to make calls as well. pressing the voice command button on your steering wheel will activate the function for voice controlled phone dialing. this function is automatically enabled once the programming for bluetooth phone is done. (i wonder how a vendor can quote me 1K just to enable this function when there's no additional programming to be done)

site sponsors should be able to do it for about 2K. since yours is a 2005 car, it should not have the necessary module for bluetooth. even if you DIY, the cost will be around the range of 600 to 800 cos the module for bluetooth is going at about USD200 to 300 on ebay for used ones. a brand new module will set you back by about SGD800 to 1K

Re: Bluetooth Pairing
