If u guys to visit BMW factory, it is very impressive how much customization for high volume vehicle.

Went for the factory tour -- it's very impressive how they automate the entire production line with complete customisation. Apparently there's over a million possible combinations.

Yeah, Singapore goes the extremely lazy route of simply selling standard ex-stock.

The sales people will always sell you ex-stocks so that they can log your sale in their quota and get commission ASAP.

The brochure is not misleading, it only serves to remind that BMWs sold here are really basic. Many things that make your BMW a BMW are not standard. Even a 740i does not come with Adaptive Drive, which to me is a joke.

You can get anything you want in the brochure. Your salesman have a list of all the options and the prices. You pick and choose and BMW will customise your car at the factory. You can even have custom paint colour.

From my experience, many things are actually cheaper when installed at the factory, like M-Sport Package (kit, trims and wheels etc). And many things cannot be retrofitted, e.g. Adaptive Lights.

Personally, I feel it's more satisfying because you buy your car exactly to your specs instead of it being plain vanilla. Not much BMW-ness there.

They will always tell you 3-4 months to scare you off. Depending on current production month cut-off, it's possible to get your car within 6 weeks.

All the best.

I agree with you that it will be more satisfying if i could customise according to my liking. But whenever i refer to the catalogue for this n that additional feature, my SE will tell me either it is too ex or gotta wait vvv long to get it customise, go outside do better etc etc...

But as i am new to bmw, i actually took his word for it.. Should hve join this forum earlier to learn more before going dwn to buy...

I dun mind pml going for the lazy route.. but can they hve more taste in choosing the combination...?? I see the combinations (which is available to customise), are all not exactly what i wanted...

Re: BMW 1 series

Yup...I actually felt, when they took out that piece of paper which shows the stock available and combinations, it's like "here are the combis - nothing you can do abt it, unless u wanan forgo discount and incur import costs".

I suppose in a way, can't quite complain also because it's fair just like any other companies selling whatever products. Just that the factory isn't here that's why. Prob then PML should set up a factory here to customise....yet again to the Germans, Singapore is a small market and it doesn't make any sense to set up a factory here :)

It has nothing to do wif geo location of d factory. It is whether BMW Asia/PML willing to sell indent stocks. It is also whether u r willing to wait 6 - 8 wks.

Not to worry. This will probably not be your last BMW. We all learn from experience. Just remember that buying a BMW should be a happy experience - picking those options you want and saying no to those you don't.

And also not to be too swayed by promos etc. Your car is expensive and will be with you everyday for quite a while. Viewed in this context, any discount may not be worth the trouble.

Don't mess with the iDrive, especially on a new model. If you need GPS, just get a Garmin. Take your time to learn your car and be familiar with the landscape before you start modding it.

Enjoy your car. The F20 is a very important car to BMW. Many BMW customers have down-sized for various reasons and do not want to give up on the features they're used to. This is the reason you find "big-car" features in the F20, which are unfortunately options.

You will do well, all the best.

Re: BMW 1 series

idrive GPS is not worth the money....i have in on my F10...but i think if yours doesnt come with it...it is cheaper and better to use a garmin..

Re: BMW 1 series

Indent order takes way longer tha 6-8 weeks :( for eg my classmate's F10 (ordered March 2010, delivered August 2010) - he spec'd up many options, so kanna such long delay until he also a bit pig blue (please translate to hokkien). My own experience with indent order in October 2011 also similar. I dun wan this, wan dat, take this out, add that in until my SE sian half half, but she patiently tallied up my order and bring to supermarket checkout. She already warn me, 6'er no discount - lifestyle product etc etc, but she fight for me that indent stock I still only pay the same deposit as normal, and also no need advance full payment for the extra options I spec'd. Not bad, I guess - but I really wish PML gave us more options upfront, and not so long waiting time. Mine is expected to arrive after March 2012 - *wail*

But I dun like the idea of an external gps which I gotta worry the holder won't stick to the windscreen and fall off, I need to keep it when not using etc etc.. Foresee it will be troublesome.. I guess I might take up Family advise, get used to the car first before doing anything....:ehhh:

How long does a customer in USA needs to wait? I don't think is 6 mths.

IMHO, it is BMW Asia way to discourage indent order. Every indent order needs to key in separately. Juz look @ how American tracks their BMW How-To: Follow a new BMW from Order, to Shipping and to Delivery

I think it's more PML trying to clear its ex stock inventory, rather than anyone (be it BMW Asia or PML itself) discouraging the buyer from indenting an order. I suspect PML gets a bulk discount of sorts by ordering certain standard specs for a range of cars. Sometimes, these standard options for Singapore are already quite highly specified - for example, my 2011 F02 was a straight forward off the rack standard spec'd vehicle - simply because it had everything I felt I wanted. Compare this with the bare bone basic F02 in the States, then I guess that's why a lot of buyers there up-option their vehicles.

What I do know is that the average lead time for an indent vehicle in the States is 6-8 weeks, not 6 months! Why the sorry lag for us? I dunno - but I reckon we can definitely do better in this aspect.

Re: BMW 1 series

out of curiosity, how long does it take for the car to be shipped to Singapore from Germany?
by air or sea?

Re: BMW 1 series

I checked Hua Yang and they are selling 118 for the price of 116 in PML. the catch is their specs is lower then PML such as no climate control or xenon lights. but for the savings of 20k i think still worth it if you don't mind to have your servicing and warranty done out of PML. resale may also be lower... consider the savings, still save $$:fineprin:
