BMWSG Sepang Track Day 3 Sept 2011 Registration

Re: BMWSG Sepang Track Day 3 Sept 2011 Registration

Shawn (RB), one stricter (but harsh) suggestion for rollovers would be they will have to "miss a chance/turn" like we play Monopoly. :) For example, recent Sept 3rd TD pull outs will rollover to Dec 10, but they will miss a turn to register for the following TD (that is the first TD of 2012). Now this is on top of the TD fee forfeit if they still miss Dec 10 TD.:) I believe this will potentially encourage all members to sign up with commitment and take the TD registration more seriously. This will also ensure other members who didn't manage to get a slot in the Dec 10 TD because of high number of rollovers to have a chance at the following TD. My 2 cents...

just a review on a M3 comp which i tried for a few laps on track last saturday. thanks for that J.

i just about hopped out of my car on a few hot laps...so still alot noise n drama in my head when i got into the calm of the M3.

i noticed i din know what speeds i was going at. no sense of sound or drama...very insulated. i cudnt hear the exos note as well. did not know gearing. brake pedal too far to right for me to left foot brake properly. gearing abit strange cos i wasnt used to it. undecided about which gears to use in some corners.

-2nd seems strange in T2. 3rd gear seems too little torque.
-pull to T4 cud use full throttle...brake at 140mark. 2nd gear into 4th...
-hold 3rd gear across 5-6..see about 115kmh around T5.
-up to 4 n quickly back to 3rd gear for 7/8...cud feel the weight most here..but car still felt planted. tires held...some chirping.
-bk up to 4th gear...n braked at 120marker for T9. 2nd gear into 9...took it easy here again danger of possible spin cos of camber.
-2nd to 3rd....across 10 n into 11. lifted off...let car settled. slight dab of brakes...right hand across 11..again weight issue...applied early throttle..ooolala. car started to drift out n was going into a spin...but feedback from steering was very good. adjusted...caught some slide..but still slipping...adjusted a wee bit more...n caught it. no big drama.
-T12 at 4th gear..brakes were excellent into T14.
-T15..strange one. not sure 2nd gear or 3rd better....
-T15. again high speed braking was very good and straight.

all in..alot of good n bad. feels quite assisted altho feedback from the chasis coming thru the wheel was great. suspension on the comp can be lot firmer for track work..but probably exceleent for street driving. brakes were surprisingly strong for 3 hot laps. brake modulation is good as well. u can adjust mid corner with brakes to let front end bite deeper for more turn ins. weight issue cant be helped cos this is still a daily drive kind of car.

i dislike the DCT. is there such a thing as being too smooth? too many gears....some corners i dunno if 2nd or 3rd is better. 7th gear is not needed in SIC. short gearing..too insulated. u need a louder exos for more feel...but then im half deaf.

all in all. was a very fun car to track in...and highly adjustable. love the brakes, suspension and the chasis + steering.

Yos Bro, dont mention, thanks for showing some of the tricks in SIC learnt alot while i was in the car with you, totally agree on needing better suspension, feels too soft even on full Full sports mode, and considering the advice you told me on Bucket seats, so dont swing and slide so much. May need another lesson during the next track day, caught some of the lines you took, but still need help with turn 9 & 14. Still got so much more to learn!

Overall Great Track day! Thanks to all the organizers for a great job again!

Dude tx again. 9 n 14 not the hardest. For me it's 11. Dun spend money modding car. Mod the driver first. I'm still v amateurish. U need a data recorder
N then ask Shaun ascendent to help u. Best money value here trust me. I spent countless trakdays n mods to get better. This is the cheapest way to improve. U will improve in just 2 trackdays from data. It's the cheapest n most efficient way.

Noted bro! Will go get a data recorder! anything to recommend?

No problem Shaun :) Sorry about the seat harness, it was setup for people of my build :)

Please, it's my fault for being too 'stick' lah.. hahha

Glad that you enjoyed the drive. Every time I drive the car, I rediscover my love for it. Now I am wondering why I bought the other car for!!
The 3 of us are really impatient to get one now! It's definite already, just which one, how much, etc. Compared to the 2-11 I find the Atom less composed, but way more fun. Mostly because of its lack of electronic nannies and its differential. So if it's done right, it's all credit to the driver. Some say it does it through brute power, but it's fun controlling it esp in 2nd, 3rd, 4th. No bodywork to damage, easy access to all systems.. it's like a big go kart. 2 decent mechs with some pneumatic lifts and tall stands, and everything can be done no prob.

Yeah, the synchros in the gearbox is going, I am having it and the engine rebuild now as there is no scheduled TCC, BMW or Nova trackdays till November. The car has done 5400km in Sepang, so I guess it is due for a rebuild :)
That's amazing and after rebuild it's going to be even sweeter than it is now

If you do get an Ariel, let me know, I will be more than glad to share my setup data with you and also sources for Ariel's parts.
Wow thanks bro, we will not forget this. Look forward to driving together!

Bro, what a coincidence...today at Sepang took Ted's M3 GTS at knifepoint for first time (next time will have to be gunpoint). Corsas were completely dead... 4th trackday and driven extremely hard with a bit too much scrub on the front, for many laps (karter endurance lol). Flat shoulders and down to wear indicator on main face. Worn to the point that Ted was worried to the point of not being able to drive it home safely. New tires were supposed to be run today, but didn't arrive in time.

Massive understeer everywhere, hardly helped by trailing throttle or lift, and only kind of helped with power oversteer (but still can't match healthy tires). It's like M5 on superdead scrubbed-dead Corsas can be as much as 4 seconds slower on laptime vs fresh ones. Easy to kill tires in just 1 or 2 trackdays with scrub so priority is to get drivers to stop scrubbing asap.

So anyway..

- Great brakes, lots of feel, just that with the tires that way the max. decel. was limited by tires.

- By far the most neutral car I've ever driven with the slowest most linear breakaway ever, slowest return, making it great for the tiniest drifts, but also the bigger ones. Whether in MDM, or DSC off, the initial ~5 deg slip is so slow and progressive. Very addictive cos it makes driver feel in absolute control. If the tires were fresh though and the fronts were not so dead, I imagine the balance would more toward looser.. perhaps less linear, but that should be massive fun still.

- Paddles move with the steering wheel so that's great, but for some reason the downshifts don't happen on command. There are delays and seemingly random bunching of the downshifts. And not because the downshifts are mis timed or rev limited either. Other gearboxes I've driven where it happens on command, are BMW SMG in previous M cars, DCT in even the non-M models, all P,F,L DCT, PDK, E-gear versions, R35 DCT etc. So for the GTS to not have downshifts on command, is strange. Upshifts fine though.. really quick.

- Good power, car feels alot lighter than it actually weighs.

- Oil temps keep rising though, 3 - 4 hotlaps and it gets unhealthy high. Engine loses a bit of power, shift speeds slow down, etc. Factory needs to work on better cooling solution if they want to compete with GT3, GT3 RS, etc. at least on rock solid repeatability at speed.
