Hi. Anyone had installed car camera using the cigar outlet below the glove box on front passenger side? Is the 12vdc power always on? Or cut off after engine off?

I goggled and found this.

Don't waste time install camera only monitor traffic movement. Importantly, record when car in parking mode. In my opinion, parking mode is as we could see lots of surprises with 24 hours recording. If you are driving F30, invest BMW "original" camera.

Hi, I installed 2 camera's on the car. One is a 24 hour recording, another I install myself using the method above. The cig lighter port works for about 30 mins after the car is locked then it shuts down. Everything on the video is accurate and very simple. The only tough part if hiding the wires under the mirror cover for the rain sensor. Doesn't come off easily and I didn't want to tug it too hard. Lucky I don't have much wires so I slip under the mirror cover cap.

Thanks for the information bro. I had lay & hide the cable and will try again.

Hi mercury,
I'm thinking of installing one for 24hr recording too. May I know which brand you use and does it cover both front and rear, also how it gets the power supply during parking? Thanks a lot.

Hi zz

For the constant recording I am using Blackvue 550 front and back but because I have the Lukas installed next to it I have to say the blackvue runs really hot compared to the Lukas. Because of this I would not recommend Blackvue, instead try ITB100HD (which I heard works great even when parked under Sun) or the Lukas front and rear camera.

The power is connected via a Powermagic Pro wired to the cars electrics, there is a timeout set by my installer to shut down the camera after 6 hours or if the battery runs below a certain threshold. To be honest 24 hour recording is not practical as the battery will drain out pretty quick, also when you park under the sun leaving the camera on so long will just fry it.

Thanks a lot mercury. The website shows DR550 is obsoleted now, so was considering DR530 with T-power plus for parking mode recording as it claims can last 10 hours, not really keen to use car battery as worry about void the warranty. Now looks like need to consider what you recommended due to the temperature issue.

Re: Car camera installation for F30, F34 & F36

Anytime, Yes you are right the DR550 is outdated and replaced with the DR650, I have that installed on another car and I have to say it runs just slightly cooler than the DR550. To be frank I have been buying Blackvues throughout the years but its only after I added the Lukas as a backup then I realize how much hotter the Blackvue runs. Personally I feel if it runs that hot just under normal operation imagine if you parked under the sun for say 2 hours, 4 hours? I suggest the other two brands because they are small like the blackvue although not as pretty has a lot of good reviews when it comes to heat and parking under the Sun.

If you're concerned about warranty consider the PML $800 BMW car camera, its costly but won't impact your warranty. For T-power my normal 30 mins to and from work will unlikely charge it enough to last more than a few hours, also I'm hesitant about putting a large Lithium pack in my car especially when the car can be subject to extreme temps.

Did ask PML SE about their BMW camera but he said it's not worth it as it's bulky and ugly and not good quality too and exp, and BMW is working on a better camera which can be on 24 hrs and cover front/rear/sides, just don't know when it will be ready. He said they can recommend a ws at Depot road to do a better wiring as they know owner well and he is good at BMW cars, most of time they recommend this ws to customers.

As you said, I read many feedbacked about overheat issue of blackvue, so most likely consider itronics 100 or 500 although blackvue got better night pic quality.

Re: Car camera installation for F30, F34 & F36

Hi guys,

I am looking for a car camera for front & black which can run 24 hours round the clock for my F30.

The one i am using is only operational while driving and powers cuts when engine is off.

I checked with PML for their car camera package. $900++ include installation :errr: and it's park mode is activated via motion-detection,

Any recommendations and workshop (with reliable workmanship) to install? Looking at Blackvue & itronics actually.

Appreciate it! Thanks!
