arent the roads outside flood prone as well? just thinking if water levels might get high enough to sweep vehicles away

Slow down water flow to reduce flooding

HAVING read the discussion about the recent floods yesterday ("Probe into puzzle of Orchard Road floods blames waterway too"), one possible cause could be the over-efficiency of our network of smaller drainage systems linked to the major canals.

When PUB constructed the main canals to drain away water to the sea, it would have considered the worst-case scenario. Over the years, as the areas surrounding each major canal were redeveloped, their drainage systems were also improved. That made the flow of water very efficient. When many small drains discharge water very quickly, they cause a bottleneck at the main drainage system. The result is a major flood at the bottleneck. So, an over-efficient ancillary drainage system may not be a good thing.

To alleviate the situation, PUB could perhaps reduce the flow rate from the smaller drainage systems. Let every drain slow down the flow of water into the major canals and this could reduce the level of flooding and perhaps prevent future floods. It is all about flow control.

Re: Orchard Road flooded

alot of suggestions on alleviating the floods r conjecture. no1 really knows for sure whats the true cause of it until more findings are released.....if they r even released

Re: Orchard Road flooded

At last they are cracking their head (not balls) to study the problem and leave no stone unturned...and not jump to conclusion within hours after the first flood.

The way I understand the marina barrage operation is that when the tide is high the gate will be closed so water in the reservoir will not be dscharged into the sea..so if rain heavily during high tide, marina barage is useless. secondly the water level in the reservoir will not be released into the sea if it drop to certain min level so if the min level is quite high then during high tide, not much extra water can channeled into the marina barrage before flooding occur..

I think too many parts of singapore are filled with roads or tiled and cemented coupled with underground mrt so rain water cannot dissipates thru the ground and need to be channeled to the sea by canal.

For now I am relieved that my properties is on high ground becos it will take sometimes before they resolve the problem..

the road leading into wilby is uphill, so no chance of flood. tessarina is at the bottom of the hill

IN an accident eerily similar to Tuesday's fallen tree tragedy, three passengers made a lucky escape after a tree fell on their car in Ang Mo Kio on Thursday during another heavy downpour.
The incident happened at about 7.45am at a road junction near Block 226, Ang Mo Kio Street 22.
The passengers managed to get away with some scratches but their car - a Blue Chevrolet - was badly damaged with its back windscreen completely shattered.
The passengers remained in their car until the Singapore Civil Defence Force came to their aid.
