COE quota issue

Re: COE quota issue

quite possibly.

Re: COE quota issue

COE is dumb way to control vehicle population... so does ERP and ridiculous parking prices

what they need to do is to reduce the amount of car loan installment to a max of 3 years....

what they want is earning money... not real traffic / car population control..

assholes...

Re: COE quota issue

kind of agree with you even though i don't have the formula. however, the only formula that government use to control car population and traffic congestion per say is $$$$$ rules.

a. COE - bidding exercise ... bidding means who pay more who gets (and who decide the quota?)
b. ERP - who is willing to pay got to use the road (and who decide the timing and charges?)
c. parking - no comment because this boils down to individual property owner

a & b = suck money - kind of agree with mr low again, it's like opium. once you are hooked on it, you want more .... and more ....

Re: COE quota issue

Good point there..

Many other more effective ways to control vehicle population other than just $$$$$..

But what to do? u know and I know and we know the situation..

+100...will still see those bloody jams every day!!!! even when COE is 50K...

Re: COE quota issue

What took them 10yrs to realise the mistake.

Now they suka suka correct mistake and cause spike in car prices.

Every time Singaporeans complain about something, the solution is to collect more $$. Same protocol.

Re: COE quota issue

the only way to get cheaper cars and pay less erp is by having a major coup d'etat

but thats sooo not singaporean...lol... the very thing i love about PAP is their ability to instill a sense of kiasu and kiasi ness.... sibei effective

Re: COE quota issue

With the 1.5% allowable car population grow rate still, eventually everyone is going to pay >$50k COE and JAM JAM JAM ......

Re: COE quota issue

i like the idea. the traffic has become unbearable in some areas... and will help support the value of 2nd hand cars...

Re: COE quota issue

Based on the road conditions, car growth should be revised to -3% to reverse a decade's mistake. COE may go up to $100,000 but we can slowly phase out ERP.

A tough but correct decision.

Re: COE quota issue

one min they r saying make cars more affordable hence lower taxes and stuff, now we are seeing a contradiction in policies. what happened to "we are in it for the long term....."?

This is also a super hot topic on VAGSG forum. One very interesting suggestion of how we can revise the system to benefit all came up in that forum.

We all know that revenue from every piece of COE, high or low, goes where. To maintain "one car scrap and one car replacement rule" , COE entitlement can be alloted to all S'pore and PR families. One family gets you 2 COE entitlement. This entitle you to own 2 cars per family (since average family size locally is 4-5). If you have big family, more than 5...you get 3 COE entitlement. If you are single, you are part of the family and so share the family entitlement. Once you get married, 1 COE entitlement. Once you a parent, you get 2 (since now you are a family unit).

For those who do not want their entitlement can sell that off in the market at market force price. Those who wants to own more cars then their entitlement, can buy from the market. So nett nett, number of cars on the road do not go up and down like the stock market. You have income redistribution, Those who do not want to drive or cannot afford to drive also can something. Those who wants to drive 3 cars can still do...just buy entitlement from those who do not want to own cars. Garment being trying so hard to get people to marry and have kids..Here is one damn good way to literally "drive" that motivation. Want more entitlement, get married and make babies!!

nice analysis, sounds similar to co2 emissions market.
but i don tink the gov would implement this.

Re: COE quota issue

Though fair in theory, it is not practical to base the number of cars on headcount. We only have so much land and the entitlement method will lead to a mismatch between car population and road space. The root of the problem is the population growth. I can raise 2 children compfortably but 4 will compromise standards in terms of quality time and material provision. So I chose to stop at 2. I wish our leaders would not overpopulate the land without regard for the real constraints. The quality of life has deproved, at least in my experience. I was a lot happier driving a Nissan in those days when the road was clear and there was no ERP. There is no point chasing GDP numbers and having bigger cars if you can't enjoy them freely.

Will they reduce the car population?...i seriously doubt it...more like maintain current car population but with increased COE price so that only those who can afford a brand new car will pay thru nose for it...at the same time help the used car market reduce their current stockpile...

err ... don't quite get this analogy leh .... What if our population keep increased to 6mil, 7mil, so on .... mean our car population can increase to lets say 2mil, 3mil, so on ...? Got enuff road to accomodate such an ever increasing population meh?

Re: COE quota issue

This can be a suggestion, but even 1 car per family will cause congestion everywhere. Take no. of units in a HDB estate vs no. of lots in a MSCP & u'll understand. A family with 7 cars dont mean that all 7 cars will be on the road at 1 time also.

but still.. u know i know and we know.. watever suggestion we come up with will not move an inch in the government's decision.. be it good or bad..
