Coolant level

Open up the coolant reservoir and see that the level is at LOW.

How often we need to top up our coolant?

Can we top up with water? if not can we just buy those coolant from the shelf from NTUC?

Please advice! Thanks

Re: Coolant level

- Fill it up to the marker above LOW i.e. High or enough :p
- Usually there is no need as each servicing, the centre suppose to check and top it up for you FOC.
- Yes u can top it up with water but only from LOW to the 'enough'/High level. Do not overfill to above the high level marker or waorst, to the rim of the cap.
- There is no need to buy coolant.

Hope the above answered your queries. Cheers.

The problem is that i just did my serving on 11 july and that time i check the level was high.

Coolant leak ?

Re: Coolant level

Coolant leak is quite obvious.

Open up ur bonnet and check the tray below the engine after left over night.. If bluish water presence, likely is leaking which can be water pump, hose n etc.. After a raining day might not be accurate as water might go onto that tray..

Visit workshop for more accurate diagnostic..

Good luck!

If keep topping up with water, won't it dilute the coolant-water mixture?

Re: Coolant level

Yes it will dilute. But water can still cool your engine and you won't run into engine overheat situation.

reading this makes me a little worried. Saw the top up coolant warning on idrive this morning. Went to check the coolant level & indeed level below below low, luckily had a bottle of coolant b'cos last time F30 got sensor problem but subsequently rectified by PML. Car 25mths old and last service early this yr...will look out for leak, hopefully not, but if not where has the coolant gone to?

Re: Coolant level

last min arranged a servicing & left my car last sat at pml after a buddy told me mine coolant topping-up incident strongly suggest a leak. :( ride only 27-mths old...SA told me a new coolant reservoir was replaced. Only collected my ride few hr back (was out-of-town the whole week), keeping fingers crossed :uhhh:

also, seems like there's a new code for my ride, saw some strange gear change symbol on the dash when using pedal-shift...the worst thing is some of my coded features are gone, all reverted back to original settings :verysad::yikess:

Re: Coolant level

Personally I would .....

- use distilled water where possible
- use G48 standard coolant where possible
- use a calibrated refractometer where possible. -37 celsius would be a nice 50/50 ratio for ethylene glycol .......

Used a G11 coolant once and my water pump died a month after ........

Principles -

Too much ethylene glycol affects heat transfer properties of water .....
Too little ethylene glycol would fail to raise the boiling point of water which stresses the hoses due to change in the state of matter ....

Because Bmw engines runs above the boiling point of water - it is necessary to maintain the right balance of ethelyne glycol and water to yield the right results for your engine .......

Propylene glycol is a different story though .......
