Degree no good ..... just get a good job

Singaporeans do not need to be university graduates to be successful, said National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan yesterday.

What is more important is that they get good jobs after leaving school, Mr Khaw told some 160 students and young adults in an Our Singapore Conversation dialogue.

"If they cannot find jobs, what is the point? You own a degree, but so what? That you can't eat it. If that cannot give you a good life, a good job, it is meaningless," he added.

Mr Khaw was responding to a participant who said the Government should set aside more university places for Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and polytechnic graduates.

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

He looks down on ITE and Poly graduates.

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

As a start, the civil/public sector should eliminate the prerequisite of a degree holders for job openings first....

With the mini$tars, it's a race to see who can reach rock bottom first.

In the running are:

"There is something wrong with the EC system today"

"Singaporeans do not need to be university graduates to be successful"

"Retire in JB, it's cheaper"

Wait... wait... OH SHIT. All 3 champion quotes are from the same guy! *pengz*

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

My NS time OC signed on SAF, he signed on with a diploma but studied part-time n got a degree but then he told me the career path's different when u sign on having a diploma or a degree, regardless of whether u worked hard later to get one.

With the exception of some ppl, most will end up in some crappy dead-end jobs without much career advancement if they do not have the damn paper....maybe minister should stop kidding himself

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

His answer to a question in a forum has been taken out of context.

Here he is saying that the job is more important than the paper. I do agree with that.

Why do people go and do degrees and end up still go and sell property or sell insurance?

NUS got insurance or property agent course?

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

I believe it's something to do with asking for more places in uni .... Which he thinks should not be obliged ?

Good jobs come from good degrees.... at least. I can understand if he is saying tat you can be successful in business or other vocations without going through the academic route. Did he say what he meant and meant what he said.

After working many years, and thinking of doing my own thing, i find my education sometimes a hindrance... risk appetite zilch and too rational to cheong.

Both of u are spot on! Nowadays people just love to take everything spoken out of context and create a big fuss out of it...

Yoda says "Unlearn what you have been taught you must. Guide you, the Force will."

That or a bottle of Cordon Bleu...... :lol2:

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

In short, he's probably telling them in a nice way that there won't be much uni places for them n they could still find a job despite not having that.

For the folks who have been thru the poly route or have a lower education (yes, I was from SP too :) ), you will find yourself rather disadvantaged when u come out to work. Chances are u will be overlooked when career opportunities occurs. U probably have to go the longer route like doing a private degree or ACCA just to catch up.
aint whining but am stating the facts of life, degree is still a nice to have if given a choice.

CK Tang once said "Why go to university? I have no education but employ an army of MBA grads to work for me.."
