Degree no good ..... just get a good job

What for have another "quota" here (draw the parallel - "we don't want too many cars" and "we don't want too many graduates" ? Got quota for cars already not enough now people suggesting number of graduates should also have not too many because "What you do not want is to create huge graduate unemployment" - KBH.

Of course everything have quota. Because everything is finite.

If the job market is small here ... then go somewhere else to work. If NUS is famous....people will want their graduates.

Then we up entrance requirements + increase quota only to accommodate more foreign students?

How does it solve the problem or question raised by the ITE students that they want to go to Uni but cannot? Cannot get in means cannot get in.

If the ITE students were good in the first place, they would have made it into the quota (and subsequently pushed weaker students out).

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

SAT is universal. The harder you study the higher the score irrespective of which country they come from. Typical slacker CMI there.

Some in ITE are late bloomers. Unfortunately, the education system here rewards the early bloomers.

But that does not mean late bloomer don't get a chance - So no "quota" please.

When you went to poly you are slightly older than the other guys in class ? But you finish top 5%, correct ?

SAT? Sorry but my opinion of SAT is rubbish...

I was 1 year older than those graduated from express in sec school, same age as those in normal. Not like I was 3 years older or something.

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

NUS also use "A" level results. That one ok ?

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

Getting very hot in this channel leh. Use some ice please. :)

Education is a sensitive topic. Along the same lines of race, religion, parenting etc but in lesser magnitude. It involves pride and sensibility. Both camps are ok because no matter what path one chooses, we all go 6 feet under when time comes. On this note, I agree that all endings are the same. Like race, religion or most rational things in this world, there are no rights or wrongs. Just suitability, resilience, passion and happiness.

Btw, technically CMU is not an Ivy league. Thought I will also point this out.

At the risk of sounding elitist (those who know me will know that I'm most definitely from the peasant class), I have to say PLEASE DON'T INCREASE INTAKE OR OPEN MORE UNIVERSITIES just to get more students thru the doors and graduates out on the streets.

A northern neighboring country has A LOT of graduates with majors in a particular Abrahamic religion. They can do fcuk all in the real life and all end up lepaking in malls and rempiting on their Honda Cubs.

Fact.

Btw, can you buy the m6 gran coupe with cabon ceramic brakes then post WTS thread after 1 year.... I bro.... I will help you bumps.

Not sure which point were you referring to. What you had said is common sense, no? So my question back to someone who would give out divine advice (any parents or Mr KBK himself) is: based on such common sense of relativity as you had put it, what would you advise a growing teenager on his/her educational path? Be camp 1 or be camp 2? In an ideal situation, all else being equal, what should the teenager choose?

Perhaps KBK was trying to console or encourage those teenagers in ITE in his message. But I feel that he was not being objective by telling everyone (yes newspapers printed it so it must be public) that degrees are useless and cannot be 'eaten'. Not sure who he was trying to fool but such pep talk had surely failed miserably in my opinion.

If its common sense, noboday would be asking such a question, degree good or not? Any young pple should just try their best to get the highest qualification becoz it increases their chances of doing well in life... plain and simple... not guarantee but increases the likelihood achieving it....

You know all these streaming are really hurting the society,
An ITE grad would possibly earn lesser than a poly grad because of their cert, yet their job scope remains somewhat the same.
Also some employers don't like ITE certs because of their stereotypical attitude towards them ,

Honestly I think they should just close ITE and push all these ppl into poly and get their diploma instead, (that is if employers are still getting this mindset that these ppl are "less qualified yhan poly grads)
going to ITE and later pursuing further to poly really waste a few years of ttheir life, esp when males have to be obliged to serve NS,
Like that they will start work late, less exp, whereas early bloomers are high up the ladder

I'm very narrow minded though, there are obviously things I dont See in the big picture

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

Streaming is terrible for kids. P4, P6, S2, S4, J2 ........ there are thoughts about home schooling my kids but then again ...... you can't pretend you are living in a Amish community. This is Singapore.

U guys make me reply again.. tmd

Streaming in pri/sec bad. Too micro-managed.

But going to ITE is NOT bad. Kids there are already 16 years old.

The ITE guys want to go poly... work harder.

There's no free lunch.

If there had not been ITE, these guys would have got stuck at O levels.

Might as well say everybody go to Uni direct, no need ITE or Poly or JC.

That's the whole point of the tiered education.

We can't have 3 million degree holders. There will always be the need for people to fill every sector and gap from top to bottom.

And disagree that ITE grads do same things as Poly grads at the same pay scale. Maybe because I don't encounter much ITE grads in my industry, but I believe their training and area of study is totally different from Poly. That would result in a different skill set and therefore a different job scope.

FYI, my retail store hires only Singaporeans, O level / ITE grads or some not even grads yet, paying them higher than my own starting pay after Poly. I will be willing to pay them more than even a fresh degree holder if they had shown the competency and value add, but no. Their mindset sucks. The boss (my partner) still has to vacuum the floor and wipe the shelve, because you know why? It's "not their job scope".

"Not my daiji". Sounds very familiar? Some things if people take initiative, they will get the pay one. Complain up down left right, this don't want to do, that don't want to do. Don't blame the degree.

I thought you take out golden basin already and wash hand.......

I graduated in 2003. Went to army. Started work 2006. My starting pay, nothing to hide - $1,400.

It's not that far away. Today, probably still $1,600 - 1,800. You yourself said, NCS still pay $1,700. Fair enough.

My staff easily getting $2,000+. Working hours 2PM to 9PM. 7 hours. Sometimes stay late abit do closure.

I tell you, CNY I still give ang pau.

My previous job? Ang bao? Ang ka chng. I don't even see bonus. Got AWS happy already. My contract don't state AWS, year end I got HALF MONTH. You think the degree guys (my colleagues) got it better, got CCNA, CCNP, RHCE all the certs, more bonus? No diff, OK? Boss is a knn means boss is a knn.

So I don't think it is really that bad... really my shitty ass job taught me a lot of things about life.

Re: Degree no good ..... just get a good job

My first job in 1993 ..... $25 per day. 3pm to midnight. No Ang pao and aws.

Look at the time power of money ...... $1700 today should be the equivalent of my $25 per day last time.

And by the way I actually have a ntc 2 cert as a mechanic. Useful skills for DIY on my car.
