Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

Jaskin

You have a pre-amp right? You only use one converter lah. HU > converter > preamp.

Preamp is the one that branches out the signals to the three amps.

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

Yup, I'm using the audiocontrol EQL at the moment. Might want to change soon. Thanks man... thanks...

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

Iceman, for your Alpine HU did you mnage to retain your steering wheel controls?

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

Nope. Lost for the moment. Alpine Europe has a part number that specfically solves this. I think it is a kit to connect. No time yet to revisit that.

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

IC, any idea how much this retrofit cost and whether it can be used on multiple modes like the 9835 etc...

You guys looking for this? Should be KCE-864B for new BMs.

My installer told me the agent could get one into sg ages ago... It's been 3-4 mths, no reply yet! If you guys manage to get a lobang to order in, do include me? Many thanks in advance.

Here's the chart from Alpine for reference:

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

Hi should it be KCE-864B or KCE-861B?
BTW Derek so this adapter is all we need for all Alpine Head units including Iceman's D310?

On the adapter's model, it depends on the number of pins of your car's connector. Mine's 17 pin so it shld be KCE-864B. The chart abit screwed I think as my car's >2002yr.

On the HU, 9835 is 'steering wheel' compatible as mentioned in their website. Not sure abt other HUs though..

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

Any update pls, if any of u guys managed to get yr hands on the KCE-864B ?? I nearly bought the 9855 today but was sorely dissapointed big time when the installers confirmed they didnt have the Steering Remote control wires so had to decline getting it till i had more info fm the gurus over here, so here goes...

To those fellow bros who have fitted Alpine HU's i'd like to seek the foll info:

1. Did u cut yr stock wiring harness to wire up the HU ? or did u get a wiring harness adapter

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-CkLfYo...w.asp?g=103000&id=morephotos&i=120709195#Tabr

2. How did u fit the BMW original antenna socket to the HU ? did u guys cut it or used an aftermarket antenna adaptor like the one below ?

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-CkLfYo...d=morephotos&a=&s=0&cc=01&g=119400#morephotos

Pleased to hear yr views. Cheers !

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

1. No need - HU just needs 12V power, ACC power and GND. Can splice and tap from anywhere inside. If you're using back the stock speakers wires and speakers, then yes, you'll need to hook up to the original speaker wires too. If you're using amps - no issue - new RCA cables to connect direct to Alpine HU (or any brand).

2. Antenna - no problem. Just plug in - socket is an industry standard.

Close of diary. The closest the system ever got to glory was to score the highest 8/10 in tonal balance in last year's Alpine sound challenge.

Last month, the entire system was stripped, and car has since been exported, closing a chapter in its life and moving to its new home in New Zealand liao.

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

Changed to a Mark X, spent countless hours deciding on whether to get the E90 323i, IS250, C200, but ended up with a Mark X as I wanted additional budget for ICE and other stuff.

System has been transfered to my new car, changes are:

1. Front stage only, no more rear speakers
2. 4 ch bridged to run tweeters
3. Lotus tweets changed to Morel Supremos
4. Changed from 2 Lotus subs to just one ID Max, running 1 ohm for 1200W.
5. D310 HU changed to more spiffy looking W200 to blend into dashboard

Main issue with the new car is the insulation is really not good, spent a lot of time soundproofing, and compared to the BMW, not that easy to get that IN YOUR FACE bass - more structural rigidity is needed.

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

Come on Bernard, give us a "Diary of an ICE install - Mark X"! Would love to see the setup!

Re: Diary of an ICE install - E46 Coupe

How weird is this. 2 years on, I've completed the "Diary of Mark X install" and finally closed that chapter, sold off the car to a new owner who absolutely loves the system...

And now looking to get back into BMW. I would say that it feels great to be getting back.
