E36 metallic "chickety - chickety - chickety" sound

on my 318is I've been having this very annoying metallic "chickety - chickety - chickety" coming from the front of the car, i've changed the timing chain tensioner, i've changed the water pump, changed the belts, and i've had the aircon bearings reconditioned and it went softer for a very short period of time, but it came back and is very loud now, turning on/off the aircon just changes the frequency and pitch of the sound. It sounds like a mix between rubbing two pieces of A4 paper together / flapping the edges of playing cards against each other. It's really annoying but the aircon still blows cold.

It really does seem to be coming from the aircon compressor area, should i just bite the bullet and buy a brand new compressor? Or is there any possible other (cheaper) part that could be making the noise?

Maybe a chicken-cricket hybrid got under the hood? :D

Have you checked the drive and fan belts? As for whether it's the A/C system's components, best to go to a reliable specialist for them to t-shoot.

Good luck! And dunt stir up the zombies with the clatter ya.

Re: E36 metallic "chickety - chickety - chickety" sound

is the compressor pulley bearing replaceable? might b the cause

Re: E36 metallic "chickety - chickety - chickety" sound

yeah agree try the bearing first (if it's an option) and then the compressor

if above doesn't solve the problem then you need to convert your car to quattro.. guaranteed fix

Re: E36 metallic "chickety - chickety - chickety" sound

thnx for the tips. i've actually had the bearings redone just a few months ago.. so it's either the compressor now or the aircon shop did some shoddy work.

might try to isolate the noise by running the car with the aircon belt removed just to be sure it's the aircon making the noise too

Re: E36 metallic "chickety - chickety - chickety" sound

Is there anything around the fan blades area, under the cover?:ehhh: Some rubbish might had ~~flew in ~~~...

Re: E36 metallic "chickety - chickety - chickety" sound

7th mth coming this 20Aug, maybe some release early due to good conduct.

A4 paper sound... hmmm maybe the blower brand is Canno or Epson, dun think is those high end Fuji Xerox.

Re: E36 metallic "chickety - chickety - chickety" sound

Might be due to free play in your aircon shaft? Mine had noise coming from the compressor. In the end, replace the compressor for $6xx (kana chop)......

when you changed your fan belts, did you change the a/c belt tensioner pulley? When I changed mine, there was definitely play. Causes the belt not to run in a straight line and maybe rub on something.

bro, which area that u stay?i'm BMW spare part supplyier! maybe i can recomen some work shop that have experience about this!i hear them told me about this problem be4!Actually this is quit a commen problem for E36!they have some of reason will make sound, like belt, bearing, some cover there broken, or the engine isself, some time is the valve over run!

they have an experience to doing this be4!maybe u can try to call them 1st!

Re: E36 metallic "chickety - chickety - chickety" sound

is it like a constant 'ticking" sound coming from the engine?

Re: E36 metallic "chickety - chickety - chickety" sound

When they 're-con' your bearings.. did they just put in another old compressor?

My compressor had this same annoying noise.. then I took it out and replaced it with a spare.. ok for awhile then the noise came back.. finally I dismantled the compressor and replaced the bearing myself with an SKF german bearing, been fine ever since

Bearings are important.. a lot of workshops order the cheap chinese/taiwanese ones.. they last only a while before giving way.. I make sure all the bearings in my car are either SKF/FAG or NTN Japan, costs more but the car runs much smoother
