E60 drinking Engine Oil problemj SOLVED at last!!!... For now..

Have been driving with 'disappearing' engine oil over the past few years.

First was top up every 5K
Then 3K
Then 2K
Then start of 2015, was every 1K!!! Even after servicing, by 3K need to top up.

Changed almost everything that everybody suggested
Engine gasket
Valve gasket
Oil pan etc etc
but the disappearing act still happened with white smoke coming out from exhaust when ramming

Till late May, then realised that still haven't change valve seals.

Bought at Eng Soon for 30+ (salesman at ES also says most of the time its usually valve seals, and more so for 3series) and went to Revol at AMK.

The guys there did a great job for a very good price (similar to JB price). They showed me the old seals and they were hard like stones!

So far after 1K, level still at Max and no more White smoke coming out from exhaust after ramming.

So far so good, crossing fingers and monitoring the level every 1K!!

Thank you for all the past forummers that contributed ideas in the past years and to Gavin/Randy of Revol

Thanks for sharing... my e60 left 9mths more to scrap. Hope nothing happens.

Re: E60 drinking Engine Oil problemj SOLVED at last!!!... For now..

Thanks for sharing, interested to know if mine is due for change

is the official name called "valve seal"?
any pics how and where it looks like?

Thanks.

Re: E60 drinking Engine Oil problemj SOLVED at last!!!... For now..

I guessed they are officially called valve seals. 520 should be 24pc/box (I think).

Am on mobile right now, dunno how to attach pic. Try again tomorrow in office.

My suggestion is to change only if your engine oil is dropping at a serious rate like mine. Otherwise the labour charges are not worth it.

You done At.Revol. Expensive?

Re: E60 drinking Engine Oil problemj SOLVED at last!!!... For now..

Revol labour charge (dont mind sharing, nothing to hide) is about S$500+.

Another site sponsor quoted me saying Valve seal cannot change by itself, need to top overhaul and the works. All in (including parts) is about S$3K+.

Of course I opted for the cheaper option first, only worst case is top overhaul or just continue topping up till end of COE.

Revol is pretty flexible in that sense and I really appreciate that!

For my case, imagine if i continue top up every 1K, 30K/year = 8 bottles of 4L engine oil, x S$50 per bottle (shell helix from ntuc/giant) = S$400, and thats excluding regular servicing oil usage.

Multiply it by 3.5years remaining, Top overhaul probably was never an option.

One simple way as taught to me by many workshops, to check whether engine oil is seeping into your engine (combustion area?) is to:
1. turn on your engine and idle for 15-20min to warm up.
2. Get a friend to step hard on the accelerator
3. If engine oil is seeping, then the first sign will be lots and lots of white smoke bursting out from exhaust.

Attached pic is the old valve seals (little pellet looking stuff.) The reddish portion is the rubber portion and can see that some are already deformed.

Hi, Bro.

My 2007 E60 with mileages 130k also have engine oil leakage issues. I top up 1L engine oil about 1 month ago and now only left half.

May I know that do your engine oil issues full resolved after changing the valve? Is it still full tank of engine oil or how long can it last for next top up?

Thanks!

Yep, changing the valve seals solved the problem for me totally. Been on my second oil change since, without the need for top up in between. By the end of 10k mileage before the next service, I would have about half left.

You can try Revol at AMK auto point and ask for quote first before committing. Best is if it's together with your service oil change so it'll save you oil and time. Revol standard synthetic oil package is about 190, if I remember correctly.

Good luck!

Not sure, so far no problem so no need for that assurance! You can try asking them, no worries!

Re: E60 drinking Engine Oil problemj SOLVED at last!!!... For now..

Bro,

its been some time since, cant really remember how much. I had changed the seals, o-rings and together with gearbox + engine mounting

spare parts at eng soon was about SGD380
Labour charge with some items that I missed out was SGD1100+ at BVO. This was back in 2014.

If you only had engine gasket, probably much lesser, but trust me, when you step into any BMW workshop, it will NEVER be only the engine gasket...... haha
