E60 - Smoke from engine and coolant leak

Bros, I had an episode recently with my 4.5+ yr old E60 - the sign flashed that i need to change engine oil. Since i was leaving overseas next day - i took it to nearest shell service station for servicing package - they change engine oil and oil filter...Later i collected the car and within half an hour the car broke down - smoke from the bonnet and the coolant was leaking everywhere..I had the car towed back to the shell service station to check what went wrong. The next day they tell me the cooling system broke and the engine affected - will need repair and ask me to take it to other workshop. I had to fight with them - how could it be a problem after just oil change?? They said it was not their fault.
Since i was flying out, i had the car towed back to house.

I just got back and looking at what i can do -
1. Any bro have any idea what sort of $$ damage i am looking at for engine repair? Also any other reliable alternatives other than PML - anyone can suggest who could take a look and do a decent job?
2. Last time i went to Munich auto for car trouble (air con compressor replace+ oil filter / gasket replacement+ pdc sensor work) - my bill was 5K....wary of going back - think i will get fleeced either way!!
3. How to prove it was the Shell guys fault (if it was their faulty labour which caused the issue?)

Any help with an estimate or similar experience would be very helpful bros...Please do let me know.

Regards,

R2d.......

Re: E60 - Smoke from engine and coolant leak

sounds like a blown gasket. not sure how an oil change could result in catastrophic failure of the gasket.

the (white?) smoke you saw is the boiling coolant + water. water mixing with the engine oil caused pressure to build up, forcing an already deteriorated gasket to blow.

not a very complicated fix which any one of the recommended workshops will be able to handle. although not sure how much water has gone into the engine. did you stop driving immediately? too much water in the system could cause a hydrostatic lock or engine damage which could mean costly engine work. keep your fingers crossed.

really depends which part of the island you're living in. choose a workshop nearest to where you live or work.

i'd recommend R2d, but that's just me...

good luck!

Yepp, white smoke...when i tried to reverse - the car died on me twice - which is when i suspected there was an issue - but there was no warning on the dashboard...immediately after i tried to move ahead when this happened - the other service guys also told me that maybe i let it run too long which caused the engine damage...

Sigh...dumb driver that i am...didnt realize till i saw smoke - that i should have just stopped and called for help straightaway...

thanks for the explanation...time to take to workshop and face the music...

Hey Beemboi

MA will fleece most of us anyway. But sad to hear that, but most shell or regular service stations are good with jap rides or other rides, unless u go to one that's specialises in BM or Mercs...
I was also a "victim" a few months ago, went to change light and the A**hole shorted my whole battery.

Cost me $180 to be towed back on a sunday from an underground parking (when it at most cost $70-80). and had my batts changed at J4C.

R2 is ok, but Rodney and Indian chap has loads of cars to handle. Nadia have "Customer Service" syndrome (that means u need to catch her on a good day lor).

So, if you don't mind paying a bit more but with a peace of mind? Juzz for Cars is still a better bet, look for Billy (the GM, Ops). He will take care of it for you.

btw, how did you end up paying $5k for aircon compressor replacement man? that's quite high boss.... :)

All the best and keep us posted on the repairs, hoped no need to panchek a hole in pocket man.... i feel for u cos I was there too...

Be Blessed! :)

Workshop with customer service attitude and yet people go back to patronize. I just surprise these people are so gullible. You should not go back so they will close down. These workshop must be taught a lesson.
