E60 Squeaking sound during braking - Advice needed

Hi,

Was wondering if any of the E60 owners here have this problem with their brakes.

Just got my 525 (2 months ago) and everytime I brake, there is this "squeaking" sound from the brakes, the sound is also audible when I release my brakes when moving off. This happens to braking at both high speed and very low speed . It is not a screeching sound but rather a squeaking sound.

Went back to PML and was told that this is an inherent problem with the E60 due to the contact between the brake pad and the caliper (not sure if this is true) and was told there is nothing much I can do but live with it. They let me test the test-drive cars and the sound was even louder !

Need advice from the members here on whether anyone of you encounter this problem and whether what PML says is correct ? Can anything be done to stop the sound ? Was also wondering if this sound will go away if I change my entire brake to an aftermarket brakes (eg brembo etc)

Mine squeaks quite loud too but only at slow speed braking. Thought it was caused by the pads glazing because the sound would be gone after some hard braking. May be should change to performance pads or to slotted discs. Changing pads would be cheaper than rotors. BBK would cost 3K+ or more if changing all four.

Mine dont squeak at all! Initial period after i got my 525

but of late, there seems to be..
i guess its abt driver's sensitivity...probably initial period, i was so busy understanding to drive the Ultimate machine...enjoying the engine rumble, how fast it can pick up...

but after a while, nothing much to do, so when in quiet car park, i can hear some "rubbing" sound..not exactly squeaking..

Bro, if u take alot at yr car park every morning b4 u start off, u can see our rotors has alayer of "yellowish" color.I guess its oxidisation, or rust

maybe if u change to Stop Tech or Brembo, there is no more sound...
bcos pay so much already...sound become pain in heart...

Think I will try performance pads on the front brakes as iDrive says to change soon. EBC Redstuff good? As for the rotors, EBC USR Slotted or Brembo ? Anyone know where to get and install?

Thanks for the replies, seems like its a common problem. As I am quite sensitive to such 'noises' , it can be quite irritating at times. Will probably wait till my brake pads worn out before deciding on the next course of action.

It gets louder as they wear out. Mine was silent when I got the car (about 2,300km on the clock) and continued so for another 20,000km or so. The squeaks started about a year ago and lately, it is getting louder and sounded like an old lorry when parking the car - quite embarrassing actually for a luxury make.

hi all im new here may i know wat happened to my car when i drop gear to a complete stop a jerk happened seems like a gear box problem.is it normal?anybody encounter this problem? went workshop to check cant find any fault.

Hi , mine got this problem too , check with pml n got the same answer as yours. Now got advise that will replace a new brake disc n change the brake sensor. Hope will get rid of the Squeaking sound . Have an appointment with pml next week but just only mine computer display just went off n radio function all down . Got to sent in tomorrow think my baby got to stay over the weekend at pml hotel ! Sigh !

Hi ajauto,

Is PML advising you to replace your brake disc and changing the sensor so as to get rid of the sqeaking sound ? Pse let me know the outcome. As for the i-drive, there were also times where the monitor will flicker (for about 2 secs) occasionally but it is still functional, not sure if whether the rest of the members here encounter this.

Hi,

have an 2005 E60 523i,had the same problem... Check that nothing stuck inbetween pads(constant squeaking at all speed ranges). Went to change brake pads at BVO, solved the problem. FYI, iDrive indicated abt 15,000 km to go but plastic portion of the brake pad sensor was already starting to get worned. So worth a check.

Look at the rotor. If you have a deep grove on it. Then ...mucho problemos.

If you change the disk pad at AB. Then you should not have the problem.
Since you have this problem. do not wait until next service.Ask AB to check.

My 2 week old 525 has the squeaking brake problem when I brake at low speed during parking. Really sounds like a lorry parking and really felt embarrassed since it was from a BMW....

Well, I took it to PML today for them to check it out. As I am running on 19" M5 rims which I brought from US, the technician told me that the sound was caused by my rims. THey told me that when they swopped to the stock rims and there were no squesking sound during test drives. They claimed that the vibrations from the rotor had somehow transferred to the rims, and thus the sound. Basically, they denied all claims and pushed the blamed to the rims, Is this possible? I am very confused, and I am also at a loss of what to do next. The squeaking sound is really unbearable during parking and when coming to a stop.

HELP!!!!

Bro patpoh i understand how u feel.. ppl look at my car a the traffic light not because its nicely done up.. its because of the stupid sound. i'm driving a E90 320 and faced the same problem as well. checked my brake pads and thought they are about worned off so i changed them. Then noticed deep groove lines on the rotors and i change them as well. Well.. still having the same kind of sound and a few shops said its normal. If anybody come accross a solution to it please let me know as well.

guys, it's nothing to do with the brake pads or the grooves on your rotors, or rims. there's nothing wrong, so don't go and change anything despite what anyone says, unless your rotors / pads are worn, in which case the indicator light will show.

the squealing is caused by glazing of the contact patch between the rotors and the pads. this is because of insufficient bedding in. most of the time in the city driving we do, the pads do not heat up enough to 'bed-in'.

all you need to do is to bed them in. more can be found in StopTech : Balanced Brake Upgrades

the irony is that most people think that not braking hard will help to conserve and prolong the lifespan of the brakes. yes, it may prolong the lifespan of the pads, but your rotors will wear out faster, and rotors cost more than pads.

and not to mention, you will also get the irritating squealing sound...

and your brakes will not be operating at their optimum...

Bedding in is something new to me. Just to simply, from the article, all I need to do is to brake from 100 km/h to say 10 km/h, and without stopping,do this for 10 times?

I hope it is not to late to bed in the pads since it is already 3 weeks for my case.
