Sweet! I'm going to call Nadia tomorrow and see if I can get an appointment. :D

Since you are heading there, you might just want to ask them about the M-FCABs (better steering feel) & M-RTABs (tighter / more stable rear)..........

Awesome! Thanks bro!

De-mystifying via Google:

FCAB = Front control arm bushing
RTAB = Rear trailing arm bushing..

Is your ride an e90? The mounts looks different from the e90 type.
btw, I've initially asked for the m3 mounts but Ron advised against it as it is too hard and will case vibration to the chassis. He recommedned the 335 type.

Re: E90 318 with 335 engine mounts

so you got the 335 over-spec'd mount and not M overkill mount yah

If you check BMWFANS, all 6 pot share the same engine mounting including N54/N55. So, the mod is an upgrade & not overspec.

Re: E90 318 with 335 engine mounts

noted.
will give that upgrade to my little 320 when the mounts are due for replacement (ie: 3 years, 60k milleage)

Mine is the same as the E46 type.

Re: E90 318 with 335 engine mounts

my engine mounts seem to be in good condition so far... no unusual vibrations. 5yr 2mth 67k KM. Will ask Rod (or is it Ron) for opinion when i go for servicing later this month.

Meeting them tonight to do ignition upgrade. :) Can't do mount change as they're fully booked for that.. anyway my mounts have under 4k of mileage on them.. very sayang to change. :p

Re: E90 318 with 335 engine mounts

Hi guys,

To solve the mystery, its RODNEY or ROD, not RON, haha.

On the air box insulation, its right that plastic is insulating, so what the insulation does is to improve the insulation properties and keep the airbox cooler. Special attention is paid to the sides of the air box facing the engine.

Some guys have already rightly pointed out the benefits of the mounts. There is no actual power increase, but you have reduced engine power losses due to the engine moving about. This means more of your BHP is transferred to the wheels instead of losing it.

true.......................just like the older M52/M54 engine (is good to change to an electronic fan rather than the engine running the propeller fan so engine can concentrate on the wheels power)...

cheers

Go for volker spec 2.. Damn solid pulling.. After 2 years, still pulling ya..

Very poisonous

Lol, I found that out last night. :D BTW the ignition upgrade is great, keeps up the torque somewhat better above 4500 rpm, where in the past it starts to die off. Thanks bro/sis (depending on whether you're Rodney or Nadia.. lol)

Re: E90 318 with 335 engine mounts

+1

you either ADD power or minimize LOSS power

Hi, this is Darryl here. I am Rod's partner. I open the shop in the day.

Think i saw you, you were driving in, just as when i was leaving the shop.

Glad you like the mods!

Thanks!

Sorry Darryl! Haha ya I think you were working on Joseph's car when I came?

Re: E90 318 with 335 engine mounts

Ah Yes! I was working on Joseph's car. Now i remember, i was confidently encouraging you to go test drive the car first right?

Nice to meet you and hope to see you back at the shop to chit chat!

Re: E90 318 with 335 engine mounts

Darryl,

Now then i know R2D opens during daytime too !!!!
Can save me from lengthy drive to SIN MING to cure my car of minor hiccups in the future.

How can it be?
1) The 318 airbox is plastic, just like the 320 airbox. Plastic is an insulator and insulating plastic is not going to make the intake air any cooler. What will help is probably a better intake air filter.
2) Engine block "stay focussed" for the car to be more aggressive (spirited)? How? A 318 engine is still a 318 engine, just like my 320 will never behave like a 323 or 325 no matter how much I spend to tune the ecu.
I think this is all in the head because money was spent. In my opinion, not money well spent.

Going back to science, the black plastic has 2 main functions of heat transfer. There is conduction and radiation. Convection does not exist as the medium does not move. So although plastics are already relatively good insulators of heat, the black surfaces readily adsorbs heat and radiate heat. We insulate the plastic against this absorbstion with a silver aluminium foil that is backed by fiberglass wool. Why only the air box? Cos the air box is the largest volume, compared to the tubes leading to and from the box, which means the air speed drastically slows down to allow it to pass through the air filter. Hence when it slows down, there is alot of time for the radiant heat to interact with the air, thus heating it up.

Why do engine mounts affect performance. All engines produced a fixed amount of power/torque. If your engine rocks when you rev, the energy has to come from the crankshaft. And this means that there is less going down to your transmission and driveshaft. with stiffer mounts, less torque is lost to engine movement.

There is a drawback though, that is you get slightly more vibration going into the cabin.

cheers

nope it is not the same..

The N46 uses air filled mounts
The N52 is fluid filled
The N54 is solid rubber

when you place all 3 mounts side by sie, you can feel the difference. But you are right for 1 side, the N54 passenger side mount is the same for the N52 engines.

cheers.
