E90 320 groaning sound on cold start

Hi all

Lately in when I start driving off when engine is cold (from 0-20km/h) the engine gives off a diesel-like groan for a few seconds. It disappears when the car picks up speed. When the car warms up after a few minutes, the groan lessens and eventually disappears altogether.

Asked JFC when I serviced the car, and they couldn't replicate the problem -- so couldn't do anything about it.

Would any informed forumer know what led to this strange groaning noise?

Maybe we really need to warm up the car during cold start...

Thanks Spencer, but the problem didn't exist the last 3.5 yrs -- so it must not have been designed in that way.

i dun believe it's a big issue as N46 sounds sort of rough on cold start. in fact i thought it sounded more diesel than gasoline.
