E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

Re: E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

Yeah, cuz I got mine changed few months ago :) The pump is quite simple device really, mechanical device if I am not mistaken.

BMW mechanical parts all quite cheap, it's the electrical/electronic parts that is ex!

That's some consolation.... I had expected the pump to be a couple of hundred bucks..... then it will be damn sianz..... LOL!

Re: E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

bro ,fyi, i just changed my water pump assy plus adaptor at bvo for 5 hundred plus including gst and labour charge.

Re: E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

I know, that's why I got mine done in JB workshop, at fraction of the local labour cost, part I bought from Eng Soon.

Re: E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

not all are ex....just go to the less branded workshops....they too can do a decent job at a cheaper cost.

Agree.... I think when it comes to the mechanical parts, these "less branded" workshops are okay. However, I am uncomfortable with many of them when it comes to the electrical / electronic parts. Coz many of these require programming and / or electronic diagnosis. Many such "less branded" workshops just don't carry the necessary equipment to do so....

Yah lor..... But this time, it's not something urgent lah.... maybe I'd hold it out till the next servicing.... Just a random thought.... coz dun want the car to have to die halfway then kenna tow.... haiz....

But than again hor, as I thought about the water pump, other things came to mind - fuel pump... my alternator was recently replaced - so that one should be able to tahan until end of life.... I think it's a never ending quest of maintenance for old car lah... hahaha....

Re: E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

So does that mean that distiller water is just fine? I don't have to go buy a specific BMW coolant? My coolent light just went on today.

Re: E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

just use distilled water to top up ....... it is the best coolant.

The bmw coolant is actually anti-freeze. the water in your expansion tank will never freeze in SG.

But BMW coolant has anti-corrosion properties. use that stuff more for preventing corrosion. so if really want - no need 50/50 with distilled water. 75/25 should be more than enough - my personal opinion.

Re: E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

Just went to replace my cracked oil cooler yesterday. Inadvertently found another use for the BMW coolant - it somehow acts as a stop-leak!

I had the low coolant warning and notice the small crack awhile ago. But after I topped up, the leak seemed to have stopped. I noticed that there were bluish-greenish "crystals" formed around the leak area - presumably hardened coolant. I drove up to KL and back to SIN uneventfully (thank God!!). But the crack on the oil cooler was worrying. So I eventually had it replaced.

My mech was surprised that it could take the trip up to KL and back to SIN in that condition! Hahah!

Re: E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

Just went to the workshop. There was no leak in the pipings. However, water pump and thermostat has to be changed:(

Re: E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

bro LKM, how often is your top up of coolant? I had this problem twice within 20k km of drive. First time, my mechanic said could be due to air trap due to change of hoses but 2nd time, it totally dried up. I am darn afraid it dries up and busted my engine.

By right, the cooling system should be "sealed".... So in theory, you don't have to top up your coolant at all. Good practice is to check and top-up every servicing interval. Sometimes, at 10,000km servicing interval, you may have to top up just a little due to evaporation.
