E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

i also changed my water pump.so far check coolant every morning.full for the last 1 month...

My water pump is still good (I think).... but I'm gonna change it out at the next servicing interval for peace of mind sake. Water pump not expensive.... I recall it's less than SGD70 brand new. Since my car has already past its 6yr mark, think it's a worthwhile preventive maintenance to get it replaced!

By right, the cooling system should be "sealed".... So in theory, you don't have to top up your coolant at all. Good practice is to check and top-up every servicing interval. Sometimes, at 10,000km servicing interval, you may have to top up just a little due to evaporation.

I am aware of that and that's why I am upset when the reservoir went dried the 2nd time. I am worried there are cracks some where. Hopefully it is not seaping into the engine.

It would be quite obvious if coolant seeps into the engine - engine oil wil turn milky like teh-tarik. Open up your engine oil cap and visually inspect the oil.

Original water pump is about $180. I got a European aftermarket one (either Italian or German, can't remember) for $65... Will be doing it at my regular JB workshop... Savings quite substantial it seems... The reason why I got the cheaper aftermarket one is that the car has only another 3 yrs to go... So wanted to save some money...

I am running the $65-70 pump bought from Eng Soon in my e90 too :) So far so good.

Okay! Finally replaced my water pump 2 days ago.... Nope, it wasn't leaking - it was for preventive maintenance. It's almost 7 years old now, and don't want to have to tow the car due to a leaking water pump.

Total damage - approx $230.

I think it's well worth it for peace of mind.... =)

Re: E90 Coolant Leak - Crack in Housing?

Not sure if this one was a plastic or metel impeller....

I recall reading somewhere when BMW initially chose water pumps with plastic impellers and one common mode of failure was mechanical wear on the impellers itself. Subsequently, when engineering moved to metal impellers, the failure mode was the bearing - leading to an unbalanced metal impeller hitting the metal frame of the water pump, resulting in a bearing seizure. And this mode of failure was more catastrophic as the belt that drives the water pump also drives other components such as alternator and aircon compressor - causing secondary and more widespread damage. So eventually BMW shifted back to plastic (or was it composite) impellers as when the impellers do fail, it "merely disintegrates" and usually does not usually result in bearing seizures...
