Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

of late, I am also experiencing low engine oil level warning on my E90.

Itsan almost 7.5 years old car and has never had the frequent need to top up engine oil as some hia dees here experienced on their E90s. However about 6 months back, it first showed the need to top up oil. I normally do my oil change every 10k km and the car is beginning to show low oil level like every 3-4k km. Is this a normal thing for aged cars or is it a sign of bigger problems to come. Has anyone had similar experience with their E90 and had it fixed?

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

did you see any oil stain around the engine block or engine floor?

No oil stain. I just did an oil change today so am monitoring again when the next oil level low warning comes out.

Liquid Moly 0w-40 on my 320i which is the one experiencing oil loss.

I also use Liquid Moly 5w-30 on my e92 335 N54 (5.5 years old car) and no oil low issue...touch wood...so far.

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

I had a similar problem on my 2006 e90 - oil leak in engine bay. Mileage approx 100k. Sent to PML, and they quoted about $2k. Got a quote from one of the sponsor workshop here and was quoted $1k+ to replace "all related seals" to stop leak problem.

Not convinced, I brought car to my regular workshop in JB who specialises in BMW's. After diagnosis, mech replaced 2 o-rings at oil filter housing, and 4 more o-rings on the 2 VANOS solenoids. Viola! Oil leak no more and I'm poorer by less than RM270 - which includes my regular servicing. I brought my own oil, oil filter and air filter though....

And I must say that these guys are super pro! They even did a complete engine wash for me - meticulously cleaning EVERY item that has oil stain. Now my engine bay looks almost like new again! Hahaha!

If anyone here are feeling adventurous enough to head north to service your car, PM me for contact. Just to clarify, I'm NOT related to workshop in anyway. Just a happy customer after saving 90% of what the workshops here tried to charge me...

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

Your Singlish now so different .....

Maybe need to change to something else ? LL04 must change more frequently because TBN rating much lower than those LL01 EO. Your oil change interval more frequent on you 335 ?

Check for oil stains on the pipes, hoses etc. Sometimes the leaked oil can't reach the ground. At the e90 car's age not surprised if gaskets and seals are worn and needs to be replaced.

Wah! So many people here kenna the infamous e90 oil-leak! Looks like the workshops are gonna get some real business! LOL!

I just got it, now sitting at the agent, they say oil leak is "wear and tear". But car only 1 month +, so I'm reading up on the lemon law and sharpening my claws. May need a laMWyer soon.

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

1 month+ used car with >50k mileage or 1 month+ new car?

even used car .... agent/dealer should provide 6 months warranty under lemon law ...
if new car ... if agent dare to say this ... go bang table real hard

Well if I may add, I am currently facing leakage even after Gasket change. The only culprit after several trips to Doc, is the plastic valve cover it warp due to the heat I suppose, gasket not tightly sealed. no stock for the past month from ES, I hear only available in mid dec, and it cost 400 bucks ! I understand.....:|

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

I wanted to add that the leakage of oil is not limited to older cars with high mileage.

Just over the weekend, helped a relative of mine go thru the car (2011 E90 318i, 30K++ KM) and found quite a few spots of oil stains on the 'exhaust' side of the valve cover gasket.

Advised her to send back to agent to have it fixed under warranty.

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

BMW build quality not just the entry model but including mid-to-high model (ie: 5/7 series) had deteriorated

gone are the days that car is built to last .... now car is built to look sexy and high bhp/nm against rival model

QC/QA is low and car start to become problematic after 5 years

Re: E90 engine oil leak experience

I had a real bad engine oil leak issue that caused white smoke to come out of my exhaust several times. So embarassing. Had to have the leak attended to several times and replace different parts. Mine was a 2005 E90 and it developed within warranty period but everytime i sent to PML for checks they said nothing wrong. Just after the warranty period finished, i went to Juzz for Cars and they diagnosed it as an engine oil leak! Looks like the problem has persisted even with the newer builds as well.

if gasket replaced still leak then leak might be from the vacuum pump. the vacuum pump is located right at the back of the engine block near the firewall.

I was lucky that PML fixed it within warranty period for me. the N46 engine is famous for oil leaks across the world.

If that is true, that is what I call a BMW specialist, instead of unscrupulous salesman.
Can PM contact?
