E90 - Unable to Update Maps

Hello all;

I am a new owner of a late 2010 323 E90, it is a parallel import and the map version in the iDrive shows:

Road Map HongKong/Macau PREMIUM 2010

I am a Mechanical Engineer by profession, and have been an IT professional for 30 years, so I do understand a little bit about file systems :)

I purchased the latest: "BMW ROAD MAP SOUTHEAST ASIA PREMIUM 2019" maps online and FSC code and downloaded the files and extracted ONLY the contents to a USB Thumb drive that is formatted FAT32.

In the root of the USB stick, there's one file: config.nfm (mapping file pointing to folder) and one folder pkgdb that contains the map data, total size of all these files is around 8GB.

I have read through many forums, and the procedure always appears to be:

1) Insert the USB stick into the Glovebox USB Port
2) Turn on the ignition

At which point you should be prompted to update the maps, but nothing even happens, the USB LED flickers a few times when inserted but that's all.

I have also use the instructions to generate a 1b, file and that was successful, so I know for sure that the USB port is working and is able to read / write to the USB, and that is a CIC system.

But now I am coming across posts mentioning that a "tickmark" must be present in the idrive display for map updates to work, where exactly is this tickmark ? - apparently if this tickmark is not present then the idrive needs a firmware update, is that also something I can do myself or can it be done by a BMW workshop other than PML ?

See the image below that I found on another forum and the screenshot of my map, I believe that this is the 'tick-mark' or 'check-mark' that indicates you have an updated iDrive system that allows map updates, sadly mine does not have this, see second image.

Are there any BMW specialists in Singapore who are able to update the iDrive firmware, BIS Automobiles and PML wont help as this car was not supplied by them.

You got a correct FSC code ? Got the correct MAP version for your iDrive ? Other issue is basically you've not put the map into the correct directory on the thumb drive causing the iDrive to miss seeing it. If I remember correctly it has to go to the root directory and not some folder.

Other then that never seen the so called tick mark just go to the settings page and hit update.

See my thread post #7 for video.

Thanks for helping, but your system uses NEXT / NBT maps and mine is using CIC/Premium, they are different systems.

The CSC code is only needed when the system recognises the USB navigation update and then prompts you to proceed with the update and enter the FSC code, mine never even gets that far.

I have tried 5 different USB drives, all are definitely 100% sure they are formatted to FAT32 and as in my original post:

===
In the root of the USB stick, there's one file: config.nfm (mapping file pointing to folder) and one folder pkgdb that contains the map data, total size of all these files is around 8GB.
===

I do not have any option "Update" in my settings page, and all the instructions on other forums for the CIC system and the instructions supplied by the provider of the map and FSC code state that:

1) Insert the USB stick into the Glovebox USB Port
2) Turn on the ignition
3) After sat nav starts up, it will prompt you to update map and enter FSC key

However I have tried this dozens, of times, after re-formatting FAT32 and re-copying the files to the root, inserting the USB with the config,nfm and pkgdb folder, which are both in the ROOT OF THE USB DRIVE, the USB led flickers for about 2 or 3 seconds, and then nothing at all, I have waited 15 minutes and there's no prompt from the system and no further activity reading the USB drive (no flickering LED).

I have tried this with engine off, and with engine on, there's never any prompt.

The attached pdf instructions match instructions on other forums for the PREMIUM/CIC systems, however the process for your system NBT/NEXT is different.

(I had to add spaces in the above url as otherwise I am unable to save the thread, seems like external links are blocked.)

Try removing all the folders in the USB stick. Just put the main map file in the thumb drive without any folders

Thanks, actually the folder contains multiple files, it's not just 1 file, I did try copying all of the files to the root, but the result is the same, led flickers for a few seconds and then nothing.

2 methods, the first is the ROOT of the USB after copying all the files from pkgdb to the root, and the second one is as per the instructions from the map provider.

Does anybody have an older "BMW ROAD MAP SOUTHEAST ASIA PREMIUM" DVD Update that they would be willing to lend me or sell me ? - I can generate the FSC code, what I need is a DVD Update as opposed to the USB update which I have purchased.

In exchange for an older DVD install, I could provide the latest USB update.

Reading the user handbook, it appears that even though there is a USB slot in the glovebox, which is normally used for map updates, earlier models such as mine can only be updated using DVD unless the iDrive firmware is updated from the factory-installed version.

Or does anyone know of a BMW coder or workshop that can do a map conversion from "BMW ROAD MAP HONGKONG/MACAU PREMIUM 2010" to "BMW ROAD MAP SOUTHEAST ASIA PREMIUM" ?

Thanks

Hi, for your case it is not a case of map update but a reflash of the firmware required. You will need to study ISTA...etc and get your hands on the SG firmware to be able to flash. Not sure about the details but it goes alone that line

Oh ya, if I were you I would just get the android replacement than try to get the idrive working. T

@imprezawrxsti22b - thanks, I already contacted Codewerx about a week ago, they said I need to replace the physical CIC hardware which I know for sure is not necessary, and it can be done through coding / firmware.

I will ask Bavworks and feedback on their response.

Cool. Will be interested to know if you manage to resolve. Not many people interested in working on e90 anymore. I wanted to install original xenons on mine, was told fat hope unless I have a fat wallet.

likewise, wanted to repair a nespresso machine, was told to buy a new one instead.

Need a favour, can someone with CIC system use NCS Expert / Bimmercode, INPA etc etc to read the following VALUES for the CIC system, and let me know what the values are ?

1) COUNTRY
2) NAVI_VARIANTE
3) RADIO_COUNTRY

The data value from each will be a 2 Byte code, as in the following screenshots from my system.

Thanks :)

I would be willing to code a feature for you on the E9X series in exchange for reading off these region settings ??
