Hi guys ,

need some help. f10 m5 using castrol 5w-30 or 10w-60 ? If I read correctly , the f10 m5 should be using 5w-30 oil. But service manager from outside workshop insist its 10w-60. I'm quite pissed to be honest.

F10M should be using 5W-30. 10W-60 is for NA engines like E60 M5 & E9x M3.

5W-30 or even 5W-40.

The service manager suggested Castrol Edge Professional TWS 10W-60 ?

service managed said 10w-60 castrol is the correct oil. didnt ask whether is it professional TWS. Is this oil approved for the f10 m5 ?

Read MW's URL link. I think some internal emails cocked up the recommended oil to use on F10M5 to be 10W-60.

Even amongst various Castrol's oil ranges, it is recommended between 30 and 40.

Munich auto uses 5w-30 for f10 m5. SA says 10w-60 is for E60 m5. If you don't have time to pop by MA to top up oil, 5w-40 also can.

Re: F10 m5 using 5w-30 or 10w-60 ?

That is because outside shop manager , arguably and probably, doesn't have the 5w-30 grade

Re: F10 m5 using 5w-30 or 10w-60 ?

If your M5 is bought from Munch, it should be using 5W30 and need 5W30 or 5W40 for top up. If your car is from parallel importer and need to send to outside workshop for servicing, 10W60 can be used if it is a complete oil change. The F10 M5 burns engine oil like crazy and 10W60 will burn less in our climatic condition.

Be careful.

10W60 will damage your F10M engine if your engine is hot and you rev your engine high. Oil will be "thicker" and not able to lubricate the parts its supposed to.

Burning a little oil is expected on high performance engines. Your M5 will burn less oil after it is properly run in. Take good care of your car and it will give you many years of fun and smiles.

Turbo engines run hotter than NA ones, especially in common start stop traffic and hot weather conditions in Singapore. It is important to use the right oil for your car.

I want to share that my M5 consumes 1 Ltr of 5W30 initially after only 600km. Later I had to top up 1 Ltr after 800km, 1200km, etc, each top up at longer intervals. MA assured me that this is normal and oil consumption will go down significantly beyond 10K km. I'm glad to report that MA was right. I just topped up 1 Ltr after about 7000 km since my last oil change.

Stay with 5w-30 or bring it to the workshop for your next service. Keep the remains for later top up if required intermittently
