Fan whining sound from dash area...not air con blower

Recently I started getting this random "fan whining" sound coming from the dashboard area. Sound comes and go. Not very loud, but still can be heard even when travelling at 30-40km/h.

It is not like the radiator fan sound, but a higher pitch noise that I can only hear from inside the cabin. Sounds like the noise made by those very small computer fan when they are aged.

Passenger says it is from driver side, I feel it is from center dash area. Off air con sound still present.

I suspected it to be the idrive fan, but it disappears once I shut off the engine while leaving idrive on.

How many of these small computer fans are there in the car?

Check your CD player. Eject your pirated DVD.

Had the same problem on my previous Merc E class. It was traced to a airflow valve in the air con getting a bit stuck. Fixed it at an outside garage for about $200. C&C quoted $6k to fix it. Hence I drive a BMW now.

The problem is...I have never used the cd player for the past year(s)...

Mine also have this sound. MA says is aircon filter. Got it changed but sound still there.

So living with it now...

Nothing leh...initially I thought is outside generator sound, coz I usually noticed it at my home car park...then I realised...the generator is following me everywhere!

So living with it now...

So coincidentally, I just changed my aircon filter at MA too...but nothing to do with them, coz my sound started before the aircon filter.

I assume you are also around 20+K km now?
