S'pore can't be flood-free

IT IS not realistic to expect Singapore to be completely flood-free given its tropical climate but the Government will continue to implement new drainage works to prevent widespread floods, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday.

In his first comments since the two flash floods this month, he said it would any attempt to wipe flood flooding her here would be very costly, requring huge spending and tracts of land.

'If you are going to do that, you will need huge tracts of land put aside for huge monsoon drains, which will be empty most of the time, (and) the infrastructure will cost a lot of money and it is not worth it,' he said at the opening of the new facilities at Lower Seletar Reservoir. (Minister salaries also cost alot of money and not very worth it either)

A more realistic objective, he added, is to prevent widespread and prolonged flooding, and limit the risk to lives and damage to property.
Assuring Singaporeans that the Government 'will continue to implement new drainage works, to improve the design of the drainage systems and deal with more intense storms', PM Lee said: 'But I don't think it is possible in Singapore to expect the place to be completely free of floods,' he said, as heavy downpours are very much part of the climate for an 'island in the tropics'.

He also stressed the need to have contingency plans for unusually heavy rain to ensure swift response in pinpointing the problem areas, dealing with them and 'putting them right', and ensuring that the massive floods of the scale that wreaked havoc in Orchard Road, Thomson Road, Bukit Timah and Tanjong Katong would not happen again.

'We have to learn from these episodes, do post-mortems, find out what happened, and upgrade our infrastructure and systems,' he said.

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

Soon PML will say it is not realistic to expect all BMWs to be completely damage-free given its tropical climate but the agent will continue to implement new cost structures to prevent widespread abuse of their quality service..................

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

I recondmend you join the Feedback unit so that your voice can be heard by the Gov......sometime they give free vouchers too.

I would most likely like to suggest to PML to change their name to ENL (Everything's Normal Limited). They dont deserve the P prefix which stands for Performance.
Shitstorm brewing.

Last para from tdy's ST frontpage article, rgd the PM commentating on the floods:

"...the litter will find its ways into the canals, into the drains, into the reservoirs, and pollute our water supply."

Isn't that misinformation?? Cos AFAIK, water from the drains are either channelled to sewerage to be treated or discharged into sea. It is NEVER re-used for human consumption!!

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

Frankly speaking, it was NOT about the expectation of a flood-free situation.

But it WAS expected that people at the helm (read ivory towers) take a good look at remedies and NOT simply lament that

(1) it was a freak 50-year accident - SO YOU SUAY LOR
(2) it would be costly to wipe flood..... requring huge spending and tracts of land - SO YOU ARE NOT WORTH IT LOR

You forgot.. "REMEMBER TO VOTE FOR ME FOR MORE GOOD YEARS!"

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

Responsibilities are lacking when bad things happened. Credits and merits are sworn to be deserved when times are good.

Such is the best leadership who deserves top dollars.

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

i also can be ministar. just need to go around shake hand, wave to ppl at NDP, come up with *duh* statements when shit happens

*Floods caused by Heavy Intense Rain*

no shit, Sherlock...

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

With greater power comes greater responsibilities...... you want power, you want pay, you want political monopoly..... YOU WIN !!!

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

Now I kinda admire Chee Soon Juan when he hollered at then PM Goh on top of a rented lorry "Where's the money?!!"

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

First it was "once in every 50 years..."

then "new learning experience"

now "not possible to be free from floods"

BG throw one big smokebomb to whole Singapore

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

Looks like a rainy day today.... Will it flood again?

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

It's unrealistic to expect the garment to solve all your problems. It's not possible for sillypore to be flood free. Sounds damm familiar.
But we're expected to pay top dollars for top talent. I like......

Re: Flash flood everywhere now

Seems like everyone knows how to use this disclaimer..... FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said on the eve of the England-Germany game: "We can talk about refereeing decisions which, when you looked at them after the game, you could say were perhaps not good decisions......"

"We didn't say you could have a zero-fault system in the World Cup."
