hi guys,

i've obtained the distribution rights to Helene Performance Air Filters, see my signature, and I am inviting one or two forum members to try it for free for a week or two.

the panel filter will fit the following applications:
(BMW part nos. 13 72 1 744 869 and 13 72 1 730 946)

E46 3-series (318i non-valvetronice, 320, 323, 325, 328, 330)
E36 3-series (including M3)
E39 5-series
Z3 (2.0L and up)
Z4 (all except 2.0L and M)

apologies to bros driving different model series, so far that's the list of fitments provided by the manufacturer.

E46 M3 owners, wait for TripleM's reviews!!

Louis

mods/admin: since i'm not selling anything, i hope i haven't contravened forum rules. if i did, let me know and i'll delete this post asap.

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

Nothing for the valvetronic engine?

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

Louis, hook me up with one. Please?

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

rodders,

unfortunately the manufacturer is unsure because they don't have 318i over in US.

i could always let you test fit during the meet up though. if it fits then you buy lor, don't fit then i'll keep pushing HP to make one for our market....

steady boh?

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

jaskin,

aren't you running a cone filter in your CAI? if not i would have asked you liao....

if you have a 4" diameter air hose/flange, i can bring in the cone filters. will have to be next shipment though.

see here: http://www.heleneperformance.com/Products2.html

let me know

edit: oh yah, *cough* the cone filters can fit SC kits with similar inlet flange diameters too...*cough*

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

Intalling this w/e.............................

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

woohoo!!

sorry i didn't manage to pass them to you yesterday. the shipment only arrived at 4pm.

anyway, i installed them on my car yesterday. i knew the filter was designed to seal with the airbox but wah cow...... it was virgin TIGHT man. it really seals with the cover of the airbox to prevent air leak... IMHO, this is a big advantage over stock or other designs like K&N.

first impressions: engine tone is now a lower bassier growl and throttle response is a whole lot better. almost like 80% of what pressing the "Sport Button" would give me! it's also noticeably louder as well, with my engine roar with the convertible top up similar to the roar with the top down in the past.

FC will improve as well but i'll need another tank or two to measure. as for BHP/torque, i honestly dunno lah, i think i feel it but i can't say for sure if it's psychological or true gain.

i've always been a sceptic about the marketing behind Panel Filters but i'm now convinced! i guess this kind of mods, it's better to try for yourself instead of reading forum reviews.

TripleM, i sincerely hope you'll have a blast with this simple and cheap mod bro! with the 3.2L S54, gains should be much more noticeable. and it'll be interesting to see how it compares to your K&N as well. but must give me some time to install since this is the first M3 i'm working on.

cheers

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

How about maintenance? How do you clean it? Do they have the cleaner and oil like K&N?

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

hi rodders,

yes, they are re-usable and are recharged with oil much like how K&N filters are. i will be ordering some cleaners and shipping it over via sea.

from the website:

How often Should the SE panel and cone filters be cleaned?
The generally accepted best practice is to inspect the filter approximately every 4,000 miles or each oil change, at which point the filter should be removed from the air box and inspected for lodged debris such as ingested insects. The air box should be wiped with a clean lint free cloth and the filter should be gently tapped to dislodge any loose debris. When the accumulation of dirt is just over the flush point with the wire mesh, the filter should be cleaned and restored with the HP cleaning kit. The HP filter can go as long as 30,000 miles between cleanings, however, a dirtier filter will not flow as well nor provide as good fuel efficiency as a cleaner filter."

i will provide 2 free cleanings for each filter sold so you can rest assured.

thanks for the questions, keep them coming!

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

The filter is in....
So far in my 2yrs of owning the M3, I have changed 3 times of drop-in filter.
First was ITG, 2nd was K&N and now the Streamline Engineering (SE)
All of which are better than the stock filter IMO as far as the filtration flow goes.

ITG is incredibly oily. Had it for a few months and discarded it.
Changed to K&N Typhoon RAM Charger 69. I wont go into details on this as it's not such a fair comparison

Then put back my stock box and used K&N filter. I swore to myself that stock box is still the best and was very pleased with this new filter. The maintenance is low, the sound it produces is slightly louder than the stock filter and the pull pass 3.5krpm all the way was like a properly done Cold Air Intake. Was happy for that matter.

However, one weird thing that I experienced with K&N filter was that in low gears (2 in particular) at low speed when I tapped on the throttle bit more, there’s an initial lag feel followed by an abrupt surge of power/torque and it pulls nicely after that. Yes, a lag and hello…my car is N.A, not Turbocharged. Nonetheless, I was very happy with it, no drama.

If I were to visualize it graphically, the linearity of the power curve is interrupted by the kick present in that situation.

Now the S.E filter is the latest one I tried. The panel looks very similar to K&N but much thicker walls. Even the color is the same.
The only thing that I really wanted to find out was if the same thing would happen again like the K&N scenario previously.

Did a few runs and the answer was a big NO. Perfect to my liking. Power and torque delivery are smooth and linear all the way. No noticeable hiccups. Yee Ha!
Noise level is about the same. FC wise, I have yet to monitor it but I don’t really bother that much to be honest. I know my FC for sure has gone up after using the Volker Racing Spec II plugs made especially for M3. But I love those plugs. It’s incredible!

Thanks to Louis for bringing in this stuff. It’s the most highly recommended filter in the US M3 forum for stock box set up using after market filter. No look back. It’s a very nice effort of him to let people try the product before purchasing. Have fun guys.

Bottom line: SE > K&N > ITG

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

so gud meh? like dat, can u pls bring in a piece for me louis? thanks

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

Are u on stock filter dude? If u r , u will find decent improvement in performance.
Dont ask me bout dyno numbers. The stuff is too cheap to warrant for a dyno IMO.

Ahhh....the TripleM stamp of approval. Louis will need to hire interns to track the orders now..hahaha

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

haha.. stamped by jack!! true.. true.. :D

am on stock filter.. i've been looking to upgrade the filter.. thought about typhoon, but wud have issues with the vorsteiner vents.. so, am getting a replacement panel filter.. but must be a gud one!!

so louis, how soon can arrive?

Re: Free trial of HP air filters

adliz,

next shipment will most likely take some time to arrive as it will include the filter recharge kits which are flammable and need to be sent via sea instead.

if you require it urgently, i can offer 3 solutions:

1) order directly from US like i mentioned to you before.

2) fit the Z4/E46 filter in. both filters have the same footprint but the M3 filter has deeper pleats. and once the M3 filter arrives, you can sell the Z4/E46 filter off to someone else/

3) give TripleM an offer he can't refuse for his filter.... one of a kind for now, so it's rare... like giant pandas.
