Funny burning smell

Just last week, there is this smell coming out from i think the front hood of my 2008 E60. Smell a bit like "burning". However, there wasnt any error message coming from the car diagnose system. The cars drives normally too. Try looking into the engine compartment but no sign of oil leak. Anyone encounter this problem before? What might be the problem?

Re: Funny burning smell

the only time i got that smell was when the oil leak is quite bad and it drip onto the manifold which caused the oil buring smell n smoke, yours is IL6?

Re: Funny burning smell

Could be valve cover gaskets. A lot of times you can't even see a lot of oil; just enough seeps out and burns to make it smell.

Re: Funny burning smell

I don't actually see any oil stain or drips. Also no sign of fumes as well. Anyway once the engine stops, the smell will go away quite fast. Anyway going to get them checked. Hopefully nothing very serious. Anyway mine is a 08 520i

bro the 2.0 engine is notorious for oil leak, next time after u park over night try and look at the ground if there's any oil stain when you drive off.

Re: Funny burning smell

when that happened to me... leaking coolant dripping on exhaust pipe caused it.

Re: Funny burning smell

leaking coolant, leaking engine oil common problem

Come to think of it, it actually has the same smell of the coolant. There is no drop in my oil level, no oil stain but I checked my coolant level and it has dropped.

should be coolant leak at one of the rubber/plastic connector, have to hoist up the car and remove the plastic cover below the manifold to check. i encounter this as well.

if its engine oil leak from the head gasket that part whichever they call it, its about 1.2k everything in, there's another area below the engine that is connected to the gear box, that part also prone to leaking so all in all both is about 2k.:)

sorry didnt notice you're talking about the coolant connector/pipe leak, for this problem is quite cheap its only the plastic pipe that's gonna be replaced and workmanship about 200++
