Ben, get the Garmin maps. The malsing maps though very updated have their limitations. You cannot search landed ppty and sometimes when searching for HDB blk numbers, you do not get a search result. The malsing maps can complement but cannot replace the Garmin maps as yet.

Yeah. Garmin maps know the difference between number 6 and number 10 Keong Siak Road.

Malsingmaps, not so smart....

SD card. Doesn't work. There's some protection thing. You can duplicate an original Garmin map on another SD card, but when you switch it on, no go... People are still trying to figure it out.

Hi ! Andy.

Thanks for the GPS demo during Feb 07 meet-up :)

I remember your set-up is very neat and nice.

My main concern is how to mount the GPS if I decided to purchase. I do not want this GPS to fly around if I suddenly jammed my brake. It can be very dangerous and may get hurt if hit by it :yikess:

Cheers !

Bro, it won't happen. I've been through 3 track days (yes it stays mounted when I drive on the track), drive up to Ipoh and back, plenty of ebrakes. Nothing.

Thank you for excellent advices from both Adam and Andy ==> GPS Guru :)

Re: GPS Round 2

Is this model the latest one? saw on the net got Nuvi 660, 670 & 680.

Re: GPS Round 2

When I tested the Garmin map to a landed property it wouldn't bring me there kept telling me to turn away.

There are quite a few models for nuvi 6xx, each have added/different functions, eg. TTS, FM transmitter, MSN, etc...

Hi ! Adam (Chickenbackside) and Andy (T6)

May I know if I travel to Perth and decided self-drive. Can I make use of this Nuvi 610? Do I need to buy the Perth Map or I can download from Web?

Thanks in advance :)

I don't think there are free Garmin maps for Australia. You will need to buy.

Re: GPS Round 2

Ben,

Go surf malsing.com. There are bits and pieces of maps for areas outside Singapore and Malaysia. Offhand, cannot remember what other countries are covered. Some of them are links found by the malsing people and not created by the malsing people. Go take a look to have a sense of the extend of free Garmin-format maps available out there.

Re: GPS Round 2

Was wondering do you guys just leave your garmin in the car on the mount when you leave? Is it safe?

Mine is mounted all the time. Have never took it out before except in M'sia. Been 9 months or so. Nothing.

But there's always a risk...

Thanks CBS for the reply.

What about leaving out in the sun? Is it ok? Cause sometimes might park in open air areas with the hot sun on the device.

Still works fine even after parking in the sun for hours. I almost never bother to take it out...

Re: GPS Round 2

Hmm... it seems that now almost every where is out of stock. Perfect Watch etc
Just wondering could you buy the GPS unit without the Garmin SG maps from another retailer and proceed to buy the Garmin maps from Perfect watch?

Re: GPS Round 2

Hi. I think the main problem between the Garmin 276C and the nuvi series, is that with Malsing maps, the 276C can do `within text' searches while the nuvi cannot. It's probably an indexing problem because of the hack. I have both and this is a dumb issue which dissuades me from recommending the nuvi others.

Meaning, with the 276C, the seach with Malsing Maps is great too, as good as original garmin maps. The issue lies in the compatibility of Malsing with nuvi, and not the inherent weakness of the malsing maps.

Conversely, the 276C has a smaller screen, an older GPS chip instead of the Sirf3 causing a longer lockon, and external speakers required instead of having one built in. But the 276C has marine mode when you can install it in your boat. Being BMW owners, it might be more of a bonus than in any other forum.

Yes definitely cheaper without the map. Around $200 if I'm not mistaken.

Many people use it with mapsingmaps. It's definitely workable. I prefer the way the original Garmin maps does the search. But malsingmaps is definitely much more updated and detailed.

Having said that, I have both, and I never like to use malsingmaps in Singapore on both my C320 or my Nuvi simply becos of the way malsingmaps does the search.

So it really depends on you.
