Mine is mounted all the time. Have never took it out before except in M'sia. Been 9 months or so. Nothing.

But there's always a risk...

dun wanna be a wet blaknet here...but in CCK, apparently, 2cars got their windscreen smashed, and their GPS units stolen. Reported in the press a few weeks ago:yikess:

Hmm... it seems that now almost every where is out of stock. Perfect Watch etc
Just wondering could you buy the GPS unit without the Garmin SG maps from another retailer and proceed to buy the Garmin maps from Perfect watch?

Yesterday, someone from another forum met up with me. He brought his wife and dog along to experience 1st hand what GPS is all about. So after I gave them a demo, he went straight to some Indian shop in Sim Lim Tower and bought a Nuvi 660 without the official map.

Immediately after the purchase, he called me asking where to buy the official Garmin map alone and I told him all the usual places. Apparently, no one has any for sale. I think it's more like no one indents S'pore maps alone for sale; they are all bundled with GPS units. Until today, he still can't figure how to download and use malsingmaps.

So although theoretically you can, this guy tried all the avenues and can't. So do your research 1st.

Hi. I think the main problem between the Garmin 276C and the nuvi series, is that with Malsing maps, the 276C can do `within text' searches while the nuvi cannot. It's probably an indexing problem because of the hack. I have both and this is a dumb issue which dissuades me from recommending the nuvi others.

Meaning, with the 276C, the seach with Malsing Maps is great too, as good as original garmin maps. The issue lies in the compatibility of Malsing with nuvi, and not the inherent weakness of the malsing maps.

Conversely, the 276C has a smaller screen, an older GPS chip instead of the Sirf3 causing a longer lockon, and external speakers required instead of having one built in. But the 276C has marine mode when you can install it in your boat. Being BMW owners, it might be more of a bonus than in any other forum.

Yup, malsingmaps works great with all Garmin devices except the Streetpilot and Nuvi series. Too bad the biggest audience for GPS is automotive specific (Streetpilot and Nuvi).

Re: GPS Round 2

I read that guy's post in the other forum but I didn't know he went around looking to buy the official map. Wonder when the official stocks are coming in.
BTW, does the N95 work well with reading contact list and sms on the 610?

Yeah, he called me a few times asking where to buy. Apparently he didn't manage to buy it despite looking around.

Nope, N95 is not support for those features. Only handsfree bluetooth connection is.

Re: GPS Round 2

Thats a shame! Must be some symbian deficiency. My previous P990i also had that problem most BT kits can't access the contact list.
Can any of the Nokia N series be used with the features?

Re: GPS Round 2

I dunno man. There must be a list on Garmin's website somewhere listing all the supported phones. It's not so much a deficiency in the Symbian platform, but more like Nokia didn't wanna be involved when Garmin approached them when they were writing the software.

My own experience is: the N73, N93, N93i, N95, N91 8GB and E61 do not support it.

Was wondering do you guys just leave your garmin in the car on the mount when you leave? Is it safe?

I take it out and stash in a compartment within the car when I park in all public places (without exceptions, even in 5 star hotel). It juz takes a couple of secs. They are only left in the mount when I park at home or in office.

Re: GPS Round 2

I have been using Nuvi for a while now. Didn't realised there is a tread here on it.
