 My E90 is supposedly wired n ready for use with BMW's blue tooth feature[which I was told could be bot for $2k]. Totally blurr, as the SE could explain further.

How does the whole system work, with a BMW or 3rd party phone and hows does it all get integrated into the controls on the steering wheel.

Anyone has this n like to share with blurr BENG me :uhhh:

The bluetooth phone system is expensive but quite nice and works very well.

First, you need a compatible phone, some to consider:

Motorola V3, L7
Sony Ericsson K750i
Nokia 6230i
Siemens S65

Once you pair the phone via bluetooth for the first time, everytime you start the engine, the phone will pair automatically with idrive. The phone's phonebook will be uploaded into idrive, so you can select and dial using the idrive controller or the buttons on the steering wheel. Phonebook updates will also be reflected on idrive.

You can also dial via voice activation, but you'll need to program the voice dial entries seperately.

When you receive or make a call, the system will automatically mute any music that's playing.

Charging cradles are available only for a few phones, currently the Siemens S65 and the Nokia 6230i. I read somewhere that the SE K750i cradle has just been released in Germany.

You cannot read or send SMS via idrive. If you're not charging on the cradle (don't really need to do this unless its a long drive), you can leave the phone in your pocket, in the boot, etc.

arhhh...mine is a 320i and doesnt come with idrive, so ?

Even if lets say it could work without 1drive, if both me n my wife drives, will the car system recognises my mobile phone n my wife s phone n differentiate the 2? otherwise then when my wife drives, all my calls will be channelled to teh car s system n she will be picking up my calls?

Re: How does the Bluetooth BMW carphone feature works

The BMW bluetooth systems can pair with multiple phones. Once you pair a phone, it's details are stored in the system, such that when that phone is within range a connection is made.

I've tried it with paring 2 phones, but obviously only one can make and receive calls at any one time. I'm not sure what happends when both phones get incoming calls at the exact same time though

In your case both your wife's and your phones can be stored in the system (assuming they are compatible), so when your wife is driving, she will have access to her phone book and phone. If both of you are in the car and both phones are paired, if you want to make calls, you first have to choose which phone you want to dial from (for idrive it's like this)

BTW, since you don't have idrive, you can consider 3rd party bluetooth kits. Both Nokia and Sony Ericsson make them and they integrate into the ICE quite nicely. For sure they work well for E46s.

Enquired from Sony Ericsson and found their HCB-700 Blue -tooth car kit pretty neat.

Price quoted was S$370 inclusive of install compared to S$2,000 from PML. Sale and installation is through four authorized dealers in Singapore located in Zion Road, Bukit Timah, and Jurong East. I cannot remember the last one. Was told it takes less than an hour to install.

Like what eggz said, the kit can pair up with 5 phones but I do not know if there are any priorities. Like iDrive, it displays the phone's contact list on the external display provided (not iDrive Screen). The kit can also dial via voice recognition; you say the number and it dials automatically.

Unfortunately, the installer I contacted at Bukit Timah does not have stock now but I have placed a booking for install next week. If interested, please PM me.

Re: How does the Bluetooth BMW carphone feature works

the only trouble with aftermarket bluetooth kits is they can't find a way to mute the OEM HU or iDrive currently, so although you can fit a SE Bluetooth carkit, you cannot really tell the HU/iDrive to mute yet...

All ready this morning for install but installer said Erisson made a boo boo and did not get the kit on time. Should get it done Monday or Tuesday.

I checked out the Nokia oso but sales rep turned me off. Told me nokia blue tooth kit will only work with nokia phones and asked me to change my phone. Correct me if I am wrong, blue tooth should be universal rite? Anyway, got pissed off and will stick with Ericsson.

Will let you guys know when installed.

HCB-700 installed on Thursday. The kit is pretty good and easy to use; didnt even have to read the manual. Cannot complain about clarity. However, I am not too impressed with the display unit and the control know looks alot better in picture.

Overall, compared with the $2K kit PML is offering, I'll take the HCB-700 at $370 (including install) anytime.

Re: How does the Bluetooth BMW carphone feature works

Hi BZSAB,

Any chance you could show us photos of the setup?

thanks.

Have you installed your car kit? How is it? Any picture to share?

Cheers
