Reason is that if happen that the filter trap some sand particles and when u never do a proper cleaning often, as the sand particles collect more and snowball to became a bigger particle, as the suction of the air, chances that the steel wire may give way and cos a hole, and the particle will get into the engine.
I am not sure how true this is..
