M3 engine blow up?

Re: M3 engine blow up?

u heard it too???

Re: M3 engine blow up?

Had a 2008 E92 M3 DCT. Been to the track 3 - 4 times. Runs fine.

Always thought 2008 was the problematic one but 2011 ?

Luck of the Irish ?

Re: M3 engine blow up?

Well the part numbers for the bearings for 2009 models have changed. Some say its a change of manufacturer. But it could be also the higher rate of premature failures on 2008 models than the other years. But 2011 models also have had their share of failures, so it is really luck of the irish in every sense of the word LUCK.
Like I said if the part numbers for the bearings has changed and there are still failures, I say that some of the oil pumps on the car have gone bad. It's impossible that even after changing the bearings, these issues still surface. Remeber the S54 had the same issue before...

heard from people that a stock M3 engine blew up recently. any opinions?

Hey bazz, too many variables in play I would think! Plunging through flash floods and emerging fine does not mean that nothing will happen 2-3 days later as well!

Anyway to get more details regarding this particular engine?

Re: M3 engine blow up?

Sidetrack a bit....do you guys hear ticking sounds from your wheels after coming to a stop / park with engine shut off?

The ticking sounds are not intermittent but rather ticks at regular intervals like 5 secs each....thought it's normal, maybe the rotors cooling down or something...

Hopefully not the clicking sounds like the US folks mention..They claim to hear these when engine is running???:errr:

Re: M3 engine blow up?

does munich sells an extended warranty for cars that just passed the warranty period ?

Don't worry that's the cowbell sound from the rotors cooling down assuming your engine is off.
It is normal for the M3 to make slight chugging / slight tick noises during idle as the injectors on the car is designed as such. Extreme ticking and rough idling is a sign that something is about to go like what those guys in US experienced before the engine kab00m.

That is normal. Just some expansion and contraction going on with Drilled ventilated rotors.

Happens when you give the brakes a tough time. This ticking sound is even louder in brake and ambient temp differential.

When I pitted after 5 laps which include cooling down lap. Ambient temp: 11 deg, the ticking sounds can be pretty loud.

Its interesting how this is happening again.

We saw this same problem with 01-03 M3s regarding con rod bearings failure. I'm quite certain there was a recall for all 01s thru 03s in Aust. 04s onwards had new bearings.

This was a few years back but when I was doing my research before I purchased my 04 M3 in 2008, someone in Australia had a bearings failure. BMW Aust replaced with a complete brand new engine.

I wouldn't have expected a 2011 to have such problem especially near end of production.

Re: M3 engine blow up?

Interesting videos I must say.

The M3 purportedly hit 310km/h during the drag race with the 440bhp Evo. Can an M3 supposedly with only air filter mods, de-cat and exhaust hit 310? :chinese:

Allow for 3-5% in Speedometer inaccuracy and factor in Parallax error, maybe it might be near 300kph.

Re: M3 engine blow up?

I have not tuned my car or removed the speed limiter for this exact reason...but one day I will :)
